Per usual, August will continue on with moderate box office numbers. \u201cThe Mortal Instruments: City of Bones\u201d is getting the widest release, but if \u201cPercy Jackson: Sea of Monsters\u201d showed us anything, it\u2019s that folks just aren\u2019t all that into supernatural young adult book-to-film material at the moment. Should \u201cMortal Instruments\u201d post a bit more than \u201cSea of Monsters\u201d to start, it\u2019ll begin its run with a $15 million opening weekend and $23 million for its 5-day run.<\/p>\n

After years of hype, \u201cYou\u2019re Next\u201d is finally hitting theaters and while it won\u2019t trump \u201cThe Purge\u201d or \u201cThe Conjuring,\u201d it\u2019s got a good shot at snagging \u201cFinal Destination\u201d-sized earnings. If it matches that franchise\u2019s most recent installment, it\u2019ll open with a $5,700 per theater average and $13.5 million total. Last up for the wide releases is \u201cThe World\u2019s End,\u201d but it\u2019s only getting 1,400 theaters, so it\u2019ll likely find itself in the bottom half of the top ten. If it takes $4,500 per theater, similar to \u201c30 Minutes or Less,\u201d it\u2019ll earn about $7 million to start.<\/p>\n

It looks as though \u201cThe Butler\u201d may enjoy yet another strong weekend at the box office and stay in the #1 spot. Should its $8,400 per theater average come down to about $6,000, it\u2019ll remain on top with a $17.5 million second weekend total. \u201cThe World\u2019s End\u201d likely won\u2019t make much of a dent in \u201cWe\u2019re the Millers,\u201d so that one could be in for another very minimal decline, perhaps just 35%, which would give it another $11.5 million.<\/p>\n

\u201cElysium,\u201d \u201cPlanes,\u201d and \u201cKick-Ass 2\u201d will be tough to call considering they were all within $1 million of each other last weekend. \u201cPlanes\u201d will probably be the one to come out on top considering there\u2019s nothing family-friendly entering the race. If it drops a little less than it did last weekend, likely about 35%, it\u2019ll take the #5 spot with about $8.5 million. Despite its weak opening, there could be some lingering interest in \u201cKick-Ass 2,\u201d so that could be next in line. If it dips 45% and \u201cElysium\u201d drops by 50%, the former will come in at #6 with a little over $7 million and the latter at #8, just behind \u201cThe World\u2019s End\u201d with about $6.8 million.<\/p>\n

\u201cPercy Jackson: Sea of Monsters\u201d enjoyed a surprisingly minimal decline making the move from weekend one to two, so now I\u2019m inclined to believe it might be able to retain a significant amount of its profits yet again. If it dips 40%, it\u2019ll take just over $5 million for its third weekend out. However, that won\u2019t be good enough for the 9th position because \u201cBlue Jasmine\u201d is getting an additional 971 theaters and will undoubtedly come out on top. Should that one wind up with a $5,000 per theater average, it\u2019ll accumulate a total of $6 million for its fifth weekend in theaters, take the #9 spot and bump \u201cPercy Jackson\u201d down to #10.<\/p>\n
