The box office results for the weekend of August 23rd – 25th sees Lee Daniels’ The Butler<\/em> holding off a weak class of new arrivals (The World’s End<\/em>, You’re Next<\/em>, and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones<\/em>). Here are the studio estimates: <\/p>\n

1. Lee Daniels’ The Butler ($17 million)<\/p>\n

2. We’re the Millers ($13.5 million)<\/p>\n

3. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones ($9.3 million)<\/p>\n

4. The World’s End ($8.9 million)<\/p>\n

5. Planes ($8.7 million)<\/p>\n

6. You’re Next ($7 million)<\/p>\n

7. Elysium ($7 million)<\/p>\n

8. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters ($5.1 million)<\/p>\n

9. Blue Jasmine ($4.3 million)<\/p>\n

10. Kick-Ass 2 ($4.2 million)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Analysis<\/p>\n

Both Lee Daniels’ The Butler<\/strong><\/em> and We’re the Millers<\/strong><\/em> are showing tremendous staying-power as the summer season is about to wrap. The latter will easily eclipse the $100 million mark domestically and ensure profits off its $37 million production budget. The Butler<\/em>, served up for $30 million, will start to see profits after Labor Day in all likelihood. <\/p>\n

The World’s End<\/strong><\/em> opened just about on par with what writer\/director Edgar Wright’s last pic did (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World<\/em>) back in 2010. The trio of Wright, co-writer and star Simon Pegg, and co-star Nick Frost usually get a decent assist from the overseas’ market that leads to the splattering of black ink on the balance sheet.<\/p>\n

Since opening on Wednesday, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones<\/strong><\/em> is already on life-support. The young-adult fantasy adaptation from the popular novels was conjured up for $60 million and has posted a 5-day gross of just $14 million. So unless the international market is feeling generous, this is a Flopper<\/strong> for Screen Gems.<\/p>\n

Despite excellent from reviews from both the lovely critics and audiences, not many are interested in the horror flick You’re Next<\/strong><\/em> apparently. Even though the production budget has yet to be revealed, when factoring in the relatively unknown cast and overall set execution, this should be on the thrifty side ($1-$2 million), which gives the respective investors hope this festival darling from 2011 could find some sizable profits.<\/p>\n

Kick-Ass 2<\/strong><\/em> dropped like a Hit Girl opponent, tumbling 69% in weekend #2. Clearly, it won’t come close to equaling the first installments $48 million domestic gross, as it sits at depressing $22 million domestic total. <\/p>\n

This week is the last batch of summer trash as Closed Circuit<\/em> hits on Wednesday while One Direction: This Is Us<\/em> and Getaway<\/em> stroll in on Friday. Also expanding is the much talked about The Grandmaster<\/em>. Reviews will be right here my fellow Shockers!<\/p>\n
