Is \u201cPrisoner\u2019s\u201d really on its way to a robust awards season? According to the critics that could be the case, but now that it\u2019s hitting over 3,150 theaters, the public\u2019s reception will give us an even better sense of its potential. We\u2019ve had a number of award season winners or wannabes hit at just about this time over the past few years like \u201cEnd of Watch,\u201d \u201cMoneyball,\u201d and \u201cThe Town,\u201d but \u201cPrisoners\u201d has a very good shot at surpassing them all. \u201cThe Town\u201d kicked things off in 2010 with a strong $8,322 per theater average, but it was also up against \u201cEasy A\u201d and \u201cDevil.\u201d \u201cPrisoners,\u201d on the other hand, is only opening against \u201cBattle of the Year\u201d and that one likely won\u2019t make a dent in its earnings. Should \u201cPrisoners\u201d manage to post a $10,000 per theater average, it could be looking at a $30 million start.<\/p>\n

As for \u201cBattle of the Year,\u201d that one could be going down the \u201cPitch Perfect\u201d track. But the thing is, \u201cPitch Perfect\u201d made $5.1 million to start in just 335 theaters. \u201cBattle of Year\u201d will achieve the same, but with 1,800 locations.<\/p>\n

As for the box office veterans, \u201cInsidious Chapter 2\u201d is poised to lead the way courtesy of last weekend\u2019s massive lead. Should it take a 46.9% weekend one to two hit like \u201cThe Conjuring,\u201d it\u2019ll get to take another $21 million to the bank. \u201cThe Family\u201d might actually manage to retain a similar amount of its opening weekend profits, but it did start its run with a lot less. Should it also drop about 46%, it\u2019ll log an $8 million second weekend out.<\/p>\n

\u201cRiddick\u201d should continue right along the \u201cResident Evil: Retribution\u201d track, which means it\u2019ll take a 55% hit making the move from weekend two to three and come in with just about $3 million. This should make it fairly easy for both \u201cThe Butler\u201d and \u201cWe\u2019re the Millers\u201d to stay on top. If \u201cThe Butler\u201d only loses 35% of its weekend five profits, it\u2019ll post about $3.5 million, out-earning \u201cRiddick.\u201d But that doesn\u2019t necessarily mean \u201cThe Butler\u201d will get to claim the #5 spot because if \u201cWe the Millers\u201d dips 32%, it\u2019ll come in with about $3.6 million. <\/p>\n

Yet again, \u201cInstructions Not Included\u201d is our wild card. Considering its per theater average has basically been slashed in half from weekend to weekend, I\u2019m going to run with that and say \u201cInstructions Not Included\u201d will post $3,000 per theater this time around and take just under $3 million in total. That leaves us with \u201cPlanes,\u201d \u201cOne Direction: This is Us,\u201d and \u201cElysium\u201d vying for those last two spots. With \u201cOne Direction\u201d experiencing a far swifter decline, it\u2019s likely that that\u2019ll be the one to slip off the charts giving \u201cPlanes\u201d the #9 spot with about $2 million and \u201cElysium\u201d #10 with about $1.3 million.<\/p>\n
