While in the midst of a beer, pizza, milkshake, and fresh baked cookie haze at the Mile High Horror Film Festival in Denver, Colorado, Saoirse Ronan\u2019s audition for \u201cStar Wars: Episode VII\u201d was confirmed, Samuel L. Jackson insisted Elizabeth Olsen is really playing Scarlet Witch, the very first clip from \u201cEnder\u2019s Game\u201d dropped, and loads more.<\/p>\n

Interested in checking out what went down at the fourth annual Mile High Horror Film Festival, finding out which iconic Disney villain is getting her own live-action film, and more? It\u2019s all right here in your Movie News Cheat Sheet<\/B>. <\/p>\n

1. Mile High Horror Film Festival:<\/FONT><\/B> The Mile High Horror Film Festival<\/a> in Denver, Colorado is still in its formative years, but the event is inching its way closer to becoming a particularly successful US celebration of the horror genre. This year, the festival included screenings of \u201cThe Exorcist,\u201d \u201cDawn of the Dead,\u201d \u201cHellraiser,\u201d and \u201cThey Live\u201d with in-person appearances by Linda Blair, Tom Savini, Roddy Piper, Doug Bradley, Ken Foree, and more. As for the films in competition, \u201cCheap Thrills\u201d and \u201cBig Bad Wolves\u201d came out on top, tying for the festival\u2019s audience choice award while \u201cThe Seasoning House\u201d took the critics\u2019 choice honor. The festival also featured six programs of short films, which included critics\u2019 choice winner \u201cVienna Waits For You\u201d and audience choice winner \u201cKiller Kart.\u201d This event is absolutely brimming with genre achievements, the most profound of which is the feat of amassing a sizeable community of horror diehards in the Littleton Alamo Drafthouse for a full weekend of honoring icons and celebrating up and comers.<\/p>\n

2. First \u201cEnder\u2019s Game\u201d Clip:<\/FONT><\/B> After \u201cBeautiful Creatures,\u201d \u201cThe Host,\u201d and \u201cThe Mortal Instruments\u201d flopped, could \u201cEnder\u2019s Game\u201d be the one to get this year\u2019s crop of young adult book-to-film adaptations back on track? Based on this first clip<\/a>, it could be a toss-up. The scene serves as a decent introduction to the title character, but doesn\u2019t make for a particularly compelling moment \u2013 at least out of context. Hopefully we\u2019ll get a peek at some bolder scenes prior to the film\u2019s November 1st release.<\/p>\n

3. YA-to-Film Release Date Shuffle:<\/FONT><\/B> In other YA-to-film news, we\u2019ve got three highly anticipated properties with new release dates worth marking down. First is John Green\u2019s \u201cThe Fault in Our Stars.\u201d Production is still underway, but the film will be ready for a June 6, 2014 release. That puts the adaptation up against Tom Cruise\u2019s \u201cEdge of Tomorrow,\u201d but considering there\u2019s zero genre crossover, the film should be in good shape. Our second YA film making moves is \u201cThe Maze Runner.\u201d Originally the film was locked for a February 14, 2014 release, but Fox opted to uproot it and plop it back down in the September 19, 2014 slot. Even though mid-September isn\u2019t prime moneymaking time, that date makes much more sense considering the content of James Dashner\u2019s book, which isn\u2019t particularly Valentine\u2019s Day friendly. It\u2019s also worth noting that \u201cThe Book Thief\u201d is moving up a week. By ditching its November 15, 2013 spot in exchange for a November 8th debut, it\u2019ll have more time to breathe until \u201cThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire\u201d demolishes the box office, but it could still feel the effects of \u201cEnder\u2019s Game.\u201d (via Box Office Mojo<\/a>)<\/p>\n

4. Saoirse Ronan Talks \u201cStar Wars:\u201d<\/FONT><\/B> Early chatter that Saoirse Ronan auditioned for \u201cStar Wars: Episode VII\u201d was branded a rumor, but now the actress herself has confirmed that she did indeed read for a part. After telling Sky News<\/a> that she did have an audition, she added, \u201cso has everyone.\u201d When the outlet tried to dig deeper, Ronan noted that the filmmakers would \u201cchop off her head with a light-sabre\u201d if she spilled too many details. However, while talking to Empire<\/a>, Ronan did expound by explaining, \u201cSo many people I know have gone in for the part I\u2019ve gone in for, and guys who\u2019ve gone in for a particular part, so I\u2019d imagine J.J. is probably just scanning the earth to find the people that he needs.\u201d Ronan also pointed out, \u201cNobody has a clue what it\u2019s about, and nobody\u2019s read the script.\u201d<\/p>\n

5. Samuel L. Jackson Says Elizabeth Olsen is Scarlet Witch:<\/FONT><\/B> There\u2019s been talk of Elizabeth Olsen joining the cast of \u201cAvengers: Age of Ultron\u201d as Scarlet Witch for quite some time now, but Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel Studios have yet to confirm her casting. However, thanks to Samuel L. Jackson, that rumor is starting to inch closer to being proved true. Jackson told The Wall Street Journal<\/a>, \u201cI don\u2019t think we begin shooting before March of next year. I know we’re shooting in London, that James Spader is Ultron and going to be the bad guy, and that we added Ms. [Elizabeth] Olsen [who will play the Scarlet Witch], but I don\u2019t know what she\u2019s doing, if she\u2019s on the inside or the outside. I haven’t seen a script.” Again, there\u2019s no official word regarding whether or not Olsen has signed on the dotted line, but it does seem strange for Jackson to have made such a statement if her casting wasn\u2019t the real deal.<\/p>\n

6. Focus Features Takes FilmDistrict:<\/FONT><\/B> Universal Pictures announced that Focus Features will officially absorb the independent distribution company, FilmDistrict. FilmDistrict\u2019s founder and CEO, Peter Schlessel, will make the move over to Focus in January and serve as that company\u2019s CEO. Schlessel has plans to broaden the Focus Features portfolio by upping the number of films the company releases to possibly ten every year. Sadly this new arrangement means that the Focus Features co-founder and current CEO James Schamus is out, but he has plans to concentrate on Ang Lee\u2019s upcoming boxing film, which he\u2019s working on over at Universal. 7. New \u201cChronicles of Narnia\u201d Film Moves Forward:<\/FONT><\/B> Even though the \u201cChronicles of Narnia\u201d films have seen a sizable decline at the box office over the years, The C.S. Lewis Company officially announced that they will team with The Mark Gordon Company to develop and produce a fourth installment, \u201cThe Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair.\u201d The book\u2019s narrative picks up decades after \u201cThe Voyage of the Dawn Treader\u201d in Narnia, but that means just a year has passed in England. When King Caspian\u2019s son goes missing, Aslan calls in Eustace Scrubb (played by Will Poulter in \u201cVoyage of the Dawn Treader\u201d) and Jill Pole to find out what happened to him. Don\u2019t expect \u201cThe Silver Chair\u201d to hit theaters anytime soon because as pointed out by the C.S. Lewis Company\u2019s director, the project is still in the very early stages. Vincent Sieber explained, \u201cWe are very excited by this partnership and to be able to work on this movie from its earliest conception on such a collaborative basis. It gives us the opportunity to develop a script and then produce a film with some of the most talented industry professionals whilst remaining completely faithful to this much loved book.\u201d (via The C.S. 8. Cruella de Vil to Get a Solo Film:<\/FONT><\/B> Now that Maleficent has her own feature film, it\u2019s on to a different Disney villain \u2013 Cruella de Vil. As reported by THR<\/a>, Disney recruited \u201cCinderella\u201d and \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada\u201d scribe Aline Brosh McKenna to pen a script featuring a live-action version of the \u201c101 Dalmatians\u201d baddie. While Glenn Close will not return to reprise the role, she actually is on board as an executive producer.<\/p>\n

9. Trailers: \u201cI, Frankenstein,\u201d \u201cJack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,\u201d \u201cThe Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug:\u201d<\/FONT><\/B> \u201cI, Frankenstein<\/a>\u201d landed the seemingly ill-fated January 24, 2014 release slot and now it\u2019s got a lame official trailer to match. Even though the film\u2019s name and budget should have earned it a summer slot, based on the cartoonish action and creature clips in this video, it\u2019s no wonder Lionsgate opted to dump it early in the year. The new trailer for \u201cJack Ryan: Shadow Recruit<\/a>,\u201d on the other hand, is oozing with incredibly visceral action. However, impressive combat movies are a dime a dozen. Now the challenge will be differentiating it from the loads of other spy movies with wildly realistic fight sequences. Last up is the new trailer for \u201cThe Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug<\/a>.\u201d This one doesn\u2019t need a strong promotional campaign to draw a crowd, but it\u2019s still disappointing that a trailer for such an iconic film franchise with such widely adored characters isn\u2019t chill inducing in the least.<\/p>\n

10. Box Office:<\/FONT><\/B> \u201cGravity\u201d didn\u2019t just dominate the box office; it blew it away. The film\u2019s $55.8 million opening marks both George Clooney and Sandra Bullock\u2019s strongest starts yet. \u201cCloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2\u201d couldn\u2019t match the first film\u2019s minimal 17.4% weekend one to two drop, but its 38.4% loss did give it another $21 million to take to the bank. Newcomer \u201cRunner Runner\u201d secured the third spot, but with a very disappointing $7.7 million start. Fortunately the film did manage to pull in $23.4 million overseas, already putting it over its $30 million production budget. Even though there was a chance that \u201cRush\u201d could have overtaken \u201cPrisoners,\u201d \u201cPrisoners\u201d held on strong enough to snag the #4 spot. It dropped 47.1% to post a $5.7 million weekend three haul whereas \u201cRush\u201d dipped 55.3% and only managed to take $4.5 million in its third weekend out. (via Box Office Mojo<\/a>)<\/p>\n
