The holidays are right around the corner and that means the Sundance Film Festival and awards ceremonies are, too, so while we honor the best of 2013 with the Golden Globe Nominations, we also consider potential 2014 contenders with the lineup of wannabe Sundance darlings.<\/p>\n

Per usual, things are quite busy in the superhero realm, too. \u201cAvengers: Age of Ultron\u201d is back in the spotlight with news that Don Cheadle\u2019s Rhodey\/War Machine will make an appearance in the film while Sony is busy riling up Spider-Man fans with news that they will move forward with spin-offs, giving both Venom and the Sinister Six their own feature films.<\/p>\n

Ready for that, \u201cTerminator\u201d reboot casting news, four hot new trailers and more? It\u2019s all right here in your weekly Movie News Cheat Sheet<\/B>.<\/p>\n

1. Golden Globe Nominations:<\/FONT><\/B> The nominations for the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards have arrived. \u201c12 Years a Slave,\u201d \u201cCaptain Phillips,\u201d \u201cGravity,\u201d \u201cPhilomena,\u201d and \u201cRush\u201d will be vying for the Best Motion Picture \u2013 Drama honor while \u201cAmerican Hustle,\u201d \u201cHer,\u201d \u201cInside Llewyn Davis,\u201d \u201cNebraska,\u201d and \u201cThe Wolf of Wall Street\u201d will duke it out in the Comedy or Musical category. The three Best Animated Feature nods went to \u201cThe Croods,\u201d \u201cDespicable Me 2,\u201d and \u201cFrozen,\u201d making \u201cMonsters University\u201d the surprising odd man out. Chiwetel Ejiofor will go up against Idris Elba, Tom Hanks, Matthew McConaughey and Robert Redford for Best Performance By An Actor in a Drama while Best Performance By An Actor in a Comedy will come down to Christian Bale, Bruce Dern, Leonardo DiCaprio, Oscar Isaac or Joaquin Phoenix. Over on the Best Performance By An Actress side, it\u2019ll be Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock, Judi Dench, Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet in the Drama category and then Amy Adams, Julie Delpy, Greta Gerwig, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss and Meryl Streep in the Comedy or Music category. 2. Sundance Lineup Unveiled:<\/FONT><\/B> Who\u2019s ready to brave the elements in Park City, Utah for the sake of cinema? The Sundance Film Festival program has arrived and it\u2019s loaded with must-see entries like Gareth Evans\u2019 highly anticipated sequel, \u201cThe Raid 2\u201d as well as \u201cLaggies,\u201d Lynn Shelton\u2019s coming of age story starring Keira Knightley, Sam Rockwell and Chlo\u00eb Grace Moretz. Shailene Woodley\u2019s due to follow-up her Sundance 2013 entry with Gregg Araki\u2019s new feature, \u201cWhite Bird in a Blizzard,\u201d in which she leads as Kat Connors, a young woman who\u2019s rattled when her mother suddenly disappears. Michael Winterbottom is also set to unveil his sequel to \u201cThe Trip,\u201d \u201cThe Trip to Italy,\u201d while David Wain shows off his Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, Ed Helms, Cobie Smulders-starrer, \u201cThey Came Together.\u201d The Park City at Midnight section will feature the latest from Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett, \u201cThe Guest,\u201d as well as the Elijah Wood-produced horror comedy, \u201cCooties.\u201d The list is endless and brimming with potential, so check out the festival\u2019s official website<\/a> to sort through the full lineup.<\/p>\n

3. War Machine is in \u201cAvengers: Age of Ultron:\u201d<\/FONT><\/B> Even though the Avengers lineup is pretty full with the original gang and the addition of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, according to Bleeding Cool<\/a>, Don Cheadle\u2019s Rhodey will also be in the mix. HitFix<\/a> confirmed Bleeding Cool\u2019s report and wrote, \u201cCol. Rhodes, aka War Machine, has a key role in the conflict with Ultron that is the main focus of the sequel.\u201d On top of that, Bleeding Cool also reported that Simon McBurney is in negotiations to claim a role as well, a role their sources call \u201cthe new Jarvis.\u201d Bleeding Cool further explained, \u201cNot a computer voice Jarvis, mind you, but an actual Butler called Jarvis \u2013 or at least called Jarvis by Tony Stark.” However, none of this has been confirmed by Marvel just yet, so even after all the Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson talk turned out to be true, you\u2019re better off waiting for the official word before locking the information in as fact.<\/p>\n

4. Sinister Six & Venom Movies in the Works:<\/FONT><\/B> As Sony Pictures teased just a few weeks ago<\/a>, the studio will move forward with \u201cSpider-Man\u201d spin-off films, specifically for the Sinister Six and Venom. Sony has assembled a team of five writers including Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon and Drew Goddard as well as two producers, Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, and Marc Webb to form a brain trust to \u201cexpand the universe for the brand and to develop a continuous tone and thread throughout the films.\u201d Kurtzman, Orci and Pinkner are penning the \u201cAmazing Spider-Man 3\u201d script, possibly for Webb to direct next fall for a June 10, 2016 release. Kurtzman, Orci and Solomon will take on the Venom screenplay for Kurtzman to direct while Goddard will write and possibly direct the Sinister Six film. Clearly the studio\u2019s got big plans for the web-slinger\u2019s world, but there\u2019s a chance Spider-Man himself won\u2019t be part of it. Andrew Garfield recently told Yahoo!<\/a>, \u201cI mean I\u2019m under contract for another one after this \u2026 as far as a forth one? That\u2019s not anything to do with me.\u201d Now of course that doesn\u2019t mean he can\u2019t come back for more, but if Sony does push forward with \u201cAmazing Spider-Man 4\u201d and decides to include the hero in these spin-off films, they\u2019re going to have to re-hire him and in those negotiations, Garfield will have a significant amount of leverage.<\/p>\n

5. Emilia Clarke is Sarah Connor:<\/FONT><\/B> Even though I was pulling for Brie Larson, there\u2019s no denying that Emilia Clarke is a solid choice for the role of Sarah Connor. As reported by Deadline<\/a>, the \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d breakout star is locked to lead Alan Taylor\u2019s \u201cTerminator\u201d reboot, supposedly titled \u201cTerminator: Genesis,\u201d and could be joined by Jason Clarke who\u2019s currently in negotiations for the role of John Connor. The film\u2019s narrative is said to include a trip into the future, a rumor that seems like a storyline necessity considering E. Clarke (26) would be portraying J. Clarke\u2019s (44) mother.<\/p>\n

6. Frank Grillo to Lead \u201cThe Purge 2:\u201d<\/FONT><\/B> Blumhouse Productions is moving forward with the sequel to their micro-budget hit, \u201cThe Purge,\u201d and has officially locked in Frank Grillo to star. No word on plot details just yet, but, odds are, the narrative will take place in the near future and focus on that one 12-hour stretch of time each year when all crime is legal. It could be interesting if \u201cThe Purge 2\u201d took place on the very same night the Sandin family was attacked, letting us see how other citizens faired during The Purge 2022. James DeMonaco is returning to write and direct with plans to have the film ready for release on June 20, 2014. (via Deadline<\/a>)<\/p>\n

7. \u201cFast and Furious 7\u201d May Go Back into Production in January:<\/FONT><\/B> Since Paul Walker\u2019s passing, plans for \u201cFast and Furious 7\u201d have been up in the air. Director James Wan and co. had already shot a significant amount of material prior to the tragedy, but still needed to complete a good deal with Walker\u2019s character, Brian O\u2019Conner. There was talk of tossing all the work and starting fresh but now, according to THR<\/a>, Universal Pictures is aiming to have the film back in production at the beginning of the year. Apparently Chris Morgan is currently making revisions to the script that would allow the film to \u201cretire\u201d Walker\u2019s character using the material already shot. However, the outlet also notes that none of this is confirmed and plans could change. Should Universal revert back to the option of starting anew, Universal\u2019s insurance firm, Fireman\u2019s Fund, could wind up paying the $150 million the studio already spent making the film. Either way, the original July 11, 2014 release date is out, but THR\u2019s source notes that Universal is confident film seven will get finished and then spawn an eighth.<\/p>\n

8. RIP Peter O\u2019Toole:<\/FONT><\/B> After a long illness, acting legend Peter O\u2019Toole has passed away at the age of 81. O\u2019Toole racked up eight Academy Award nominations, his first for the 1962 release, \u201cLawrence of Arabia,\u201d and his most recent for Roger Michell\u2019s \u201cVenus\u201d in 2006. Even though O\u2019Toole never won an Oscar, the Academy did try to honor him with one via a Lifetime Achievement Award. O\u2019Toole made an attempt to turn it down, insisting that he\u2019s \u201cstill in the game and might win the bugger outright,\u201d but did wind up accepting that award in addition to four Golden Globes, a Primetime Emmy and a BAFTA Award. His daughter, Kate O\u2019Toole, delivered this statement in regards to her father\u2019s passing: \u201cHis family are very appreciative and completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of real love and affection being expressed towards him, and to us, during this unhappy time. 9. Trailers: \u201cInterstellar,\u201d \u201cJupiter Ascending,\u201d \u201cEdge of Tomorrow,\u201d \u201cGodzilla:\u201d<\/FONT><\/B> When new trailers for films like \u201cInterstellar,\u201d \u201cJupiter Ascending,\u201d \u201cEdge of Tomorrow\u201d and \u201cGodzilla\u201d all arrive in the same week, there\u2019s no way to narrow it down to three so welcome to a supersized version of the Movie News Cheat Sheet<\/B> trailer section. First up is the teaser for Christopher Nolan\u2019s upcoming release, \u201cInterstellar<\/a>.\u201d Rather than go straight for the plot, Paramount kicks off the promotional campaign with a historical retrospective, highlight the string of achievements that led to spaceflight. Next is the Wachowski\u2019s \u201cCloud Atlas\u201d follow-up, \u201cJupiter Ascending<\/a>.\u201d The promo shows off the film\u2019s top-notch talent and a string of stunning visuals, but falls just sort of making the narrative details coalesce to the point that you believe and care. The new trailer for \u201cEdge of Tomorrow<\/a>\u201d has a similar issue. Between Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt and the sci-fi appeal, this one\u2019s an easy sell, but that doesn\u2019t necessarily mean it\u2019s got the potential to be a standout. In fact, one of the trailer\u2019s most devastating flaws is that it features quite a few familiar components, namely a particular song choice and the similarities between the armor featured here and the rig in \u201cElysium.\u201d We saved the best for last, so now it\u2019s time to indulge in the best movie trailer of the week, the one for Gareth Edwards\u2019 \u201cGodzilla<\/a>.\u201d Edwards and co. get major points for opening their marketing effort with a well-constructed, thoughtful and highly absorbing piece that suggests this really could be a strikingly fresh spin on the beast while still honoring Godzilla\u2019s iconic standing.<\/p>\n

10. Box Office:<\/FONT><\/B> It didn\u2019t open as big as \u201cAn Unexpected Journey,\u201d but \u201cThe Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug\u201d did still secure the top spot with a solid $18,877 per theater average, kicking off its domestic theatrical run with a total of $73.7 million, just under $11 million behind the first installment. \u201cFrozen\u201d held on exceptionally well making the move from weekend three to four, dropping just 29.8% and making off with a $22.2 million haul. Unfortunately for Tyler Perry, \u201cA Madea Christmas\u201d marks his weakest Madea movie opening yet. The film didn\u2019t get as wide a release as \u201cDesolation of Smaug,\u201d but almost all of the Madea movies opened in roughly 2,200 theaters, making this installment\u2019s $7,293 per theater average and $16 million debut a disappointing start. \u201cThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire\u201d lost 600 theaters, but held on well considering. It lost 49.8% of its weekend three earnings, letting it post $13.2 million for its fourth weekend in theaters. \u201cThor: The Dark World\u201d rounds out the top five courtesy of its 43.9% drop, which gave it just enough to keep on top of \u201cOut of the Furnace\u2019s\u201d $2.3 million weekend two intake with $2.7 million of its own.
