Welcome to the calm before the storm. With most of the hype centering on the jam-packed Christmas Day slot, this weekend\u2019s new releases could open a bit on the softer side, but \u201cAnchorman 2: The Legend Continues<\/strong>\u201d is worth keeping an eye on. Even though it\u2019s been nearly a decade since the first film hit, that movie amassed an enormous cult following and there\u2019s no doubt that the large majority of Ron Burgundy fans will come out to catch the sequel. Should this one pull a \u201cGrown Up 2,\u201d \u201cAnchorman 2\u201d could dominate the weekend with a $40 million start. We\u2019ve also got \u201cWalking with Dinosaurs<\/strong>\u201d arriving in 3,231 theaters, but thanks to a rather weak promotional push and \u201cFrozen\u2019s\u201d long legs, it might end up being this year\u2019s \u201cThe Adventures of Tintin\u201d and post just $10 million to start.<\/p>\n

The #2 spot will be an easy win for \u201cThe Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug<\/strong>,\u201d but the question is, how well will it hold? \u201cAn Unexpected Journey\u201d took a 56.4% dip making the move from weekend one to two, but it had more to lose. On the other hand, \u201cThe Desolation of Smaug\u201d could be in for the bigger fall because it\u2019s got stronger weekend two competition. Last year, both \u201cJack Reacher\u201d and \u201cThis Is 40\u201d underperformed, letting \u201cAn Unexpected Journey\u201d hold on to the top spot for two weekends in a row. Considering there are ups and downs, we\u2019ll split the difference and say \u201cThe Desolation of Smaug\u201d will also dip about 55% and come in with $33 million for its second weekend out. <\/p>\n

Here\u2019s where \u201cAmerican Hustle<\/strong>\u201d will likely slip in. It only opened in six theaters last weekend, but managed to post a highly impressive $123,409 per theater average suggesting its first weekend as a wide release could be a big one. Even if that number comes down to about $9,000, it\u2019s still looking at an easy third place win with $22 million. As for \u201cSaving Mr. Banks<\/strong>,\u201d on the other hand, its wide expansion won\u2019t make it much of a moneymaker. Last weekend it only posted $27,558 per theater at 15 locations, so its average could come all the way down to $4,000, only letting it take another $8 million to the bank.<\/p>\n

With \u201cSaving Mr. Banks\u201d and \u201cWalking with Dinosaurs\u201d opening so low, \u201cFrozen<\/strong>\u201d should be able to stay strong and snag the #4 spot with another 30% drop for a $15 million weekend five total. Should \u201cTyler Perry\u2019s A Madea Christmas<\/strong>\u201d take a brutal weekend one to two hit like the large majority of Perry\u2019s movies, \u201cThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire<\/strong>\u201d will steal the #7 spot with $9 million, pushing \u201cMadea\u201d and its $8 million weekend two intake down to #8.<\/p>\n

\u201cThor: The Dark World,\u201d \u201cOut of the Furnace\u201d and \u201cDelivery Man\u201d are all due to lose well over 1,000 theaters so \u201cPhilomena<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cThe Book Thief<\/strong>\u201d could get to enjoy one last weekend in the top ten. Should \u201cPhilomena\u2019s\u201d 17.1% weekend four dip come up to 30%, it\u2019ll come in at #9 with about $1.3 million while \u201cThe Book Thief\u201d will likely drop 40% and take another $1 million even.<\/p>\n
