It\u2019s a crowded Christmas weekend at the box office and there\u2019s only so much cash to go around. Even though \u201cThe Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug<\/strong>\u201d topped \u201cThe Wolf of Wall Street<\/strong>\u201d on Wednesday, the former\u2019s appeal will slowly decline while the latter should stretch its legs through the weekend. Should \u201cThe Hobbit\u2019s\u201d per theater average come down from $8,021 to about $6,000, it\u2019ll take another $23 million while \u201cWolf of Wall Street\u201d will likely kick off its run with $9,000 per location and just over $23 million for its first three-day weekend out.<\/p>\n

Even though \u201cAnchorman 2: The Legend Continues<\/strong>\u201d didn\u2019t open as strong as expected, it should be able to maintain considering there\u2019s no new direct comedy competition. If it dips 37%, it\u2019ll take $17 million for its second weekend out. However, \u201cAnchorman\u201d could still find itself in a similar position as \u201cThe Hobbit\u201d and still lose the third spot to newcomer, \u201cThe Secret Life of Walter Mitty<\/strong>.\u201d Even though \u201cWalter Mitty\u201d came in just behind \u201cAnchorman\u201d on Wednesday, it\u2019s \u201cWalter Mitty\u201d that\u2019ll have the staying power. If it locks in a $6,000 per theater average at its 2,909 theaters, it\u2019ll knock \u201cAnchorman\u201d down to #4 with $17.5 million of its own.<\/p>\n

Now the question is, will \u201c47 Ronin<\/strong>\u201d have the same effect on \u201cAmerican Hustle<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cFrozen<\/strong>?\u201d In \u201cFrozen\u2019s\u201d case, the answer is probably yes, but \u201cAmerican Hustle\u201d should manage to beat \u201c47 Ronin\u201d for the #5 spot. On Wednesday, \u201cAmerican Hustle\u201d and \u201c47 Ronin\u201d were neck in neck, the former with $2,952 per theater and the latter with $2,616. Should \u201c47 Ronin\u201d manage to snag $5,000 per theater over the weekend for $13.5 million in total, \u201cAmerican Hustle\u201d can\u2019t dip more than 30% to keep right on top. As for \u201cFrozen,\u201d it\u2019s maintained exceptionally well over the last five weeks and even though it\u2019s losing 205 locations, it should still achieve the same this time around. Even if last weekend\u2019s 13% decline gets bumped up to 30%, the #7 spot will still be an easy grab. <\/p>\n

\u201cSaving Mr. Banks<\/strong>\u201d hasn\u2019t been much of a moneymaker, but it should hold strong in its second weekend as a wide release. If it drops 25%, it\u2019ll lock in #8 with a solid $7 million total. \u201cGrudge Match<\/strong>\u201d had a rough first day out, but considering both \u201cA Madea Christmas\u201d and \u201cThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire<\/strong>\u201d trailed well behind on Wednesday, it should still be able to snag #9 with about $6 million for its first weekend out. Even though \u201cMadea\u201d kept ahead on Wednesday, come the weekend, Christmastime hype is long gone and it\u2019ll be playing in less locations than \u201cCatching Fire\u201d so \u201cThe Hunger Games\u201d will likely get to enjoy one last go-around in the top ten by putting another $5 million in the bank.<\/p>\n
