Another year gone, another crop of movies worth remembering and another batch to look forward to in the 2014. But before we roll into the New Year, it\u2019s time to make sure we recognize and never forget the events, promos, moments and full features that defined this one.<\/p>\n

The final Movie News Cheat Sheet<\/B> of 2013 is dedicated to the best of the best, the best scenes, the best quotes, the best trailers and more. Check out our picks as well the top contenders from around the web and be sure to list your own favorites in the comment section below.<\/p>\n

Have a happy, healthy and movie-filled New Year!<\/p>\n

1. Biggest Movie News:<\/FONT><\/B> Fifty-two weeks later, we\u2019ve reached the end of another movie news packed year. There were loads of announcements that seemed like the next big thing when they first hit, but only a few that would define the year. \u201cStar Wars\u201d became a key theme of 2013 when news broke<\/a> that J.J. Abrams would helm \u201cEpisode VII\u201d and ever since Colin Trevorrow locked \u201cJurassic World,\u201d JP dinosaurs frequently cropped up in the rotation, too. Even though news of a \u201cBatman vs. Superman<\/a>\u201d movie featuring Ben Affleck<\/a> as Batman nearly made the Internet implode, a little boy named Miles Scott did manage to steal some of the spotlight<\/a> when he got to play superhero for a day thanks to the city of San Francisco and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. \u201cVeronica Mars\u201d also made waves in 2013 by kicking off a Kickstarter craze<\/a> after raising over $5.5 million to bring the TV show to screen. However, it was troubled times for both \u201cJane Got a Gun\u201d and \u201cFifty Shades of Grey.\u201d \u201cJane\u201d went through a seemingly endless string of casting, quitting and recasting<\/a> while \u201cFifty Shades\u201d gushed over Charlie Hunnam only to have him back out<\/a> and spark major concerns regarding the quality of the script. We\u2019re also moving into the New Year having lost some of the industry\u2019s top talent including Roger Ebert<\/a>, James Gandolfini and Paul Walker<\/a>, but all three will live on through their work with RogerEbert.com continuing to thrive under Matt Zoller Seitz\u2019s guidance, \u201cThe Sopranos\u201d having made an indelible impression on the entertainment industry and \u201cFast and Furious 7\u201d inching closer to being able to wrap production.<\/p>\n

2. Most Memorable Quotes:<\/FONT><\/B> Quotes that are used and abused in movie trailers like \u201cPacific Rim\u2019s\u201d \u201cToday, we are cancelling the apocalypse,\u201d do grow on you, but you\u2019re missing out if you\u2019re not keeping an ear out for the hidden gems. \u201cWhen you sail on a boat fit for a Bond villain, sometimes, you need to play the part\u201d from \u201cWolf of Wall Street\u201d is a recent favorite and \u201cFrozen\u201d has me thinking \u201cLet it go\u201d around the clock. NBC News<\/a> has a list of the funniest quotes of 2013 including the very amusing \u201cDespicable Me 2\u201d moment when a little boy asks Gru, \u201cHow come you’re so fat,\u201d and he replies, \u201cBecause my house is made out of candy and sometimes I eat instead of facing my problems!\u201d Thanks to \u201cAmerican Hustle,\u201d the microwave is now the \u201cscience oven\u201d and in case you\u2019re ever in a foul mood, you\u2019ve always got \u201cKick Ass 2\u2019s\u201d Colonel Stars and Stripes to remind you, \u201cTry to have fun. Otherwise, what\u2019s the point?\u201d<\/p>\n

3. Biggest Stars:<\/FONT><\/B> With titles like \u201c12 Years a Slave,\u201d \u201cThe Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug,\u201d \u201cAugust: Osage County,\u201d and especially \u201cStar Trek Into Darkness\u201d to his name, it\u2019s no wonder that Benedict Cumberbatch snagged the honor of kicking off IMDb\u2019s Top 10 Stars of 2013 list<\/a>. Thor was hot stuff in 2012 with Chris Hemsworth snagging #3, but this time around, Superman\u2019s got more muscle, as Henry Cavill claimed #8 and pushed Hemsworth down to #9. Even though \u201cLone Ranger\u201d tanked, Johnny Depp still had more than enough star power to lock in #7 for the second year in a row and then there\u2019s Anna Kendrick who didn\u2019t even have a wide release hit theaters this year yet still wound up coming in at #6. Tom Hardy found himself in a similar position. Even without a single 2013 release, the residual effects of a strong 2012 and loads of hype surrounding his 2014 and 2015 projects earned him #5. Ryan Gosling turned \u201cGangster Squad,\u201d \u201cThe Place Beyond the Pines, and \u201cOnly God Forgives\u201d into #4 while Leonardo DiCaprio rode the \u201cGreat Gatsby\u201d and \u201cWolf of Wall Street\u201d wave to #3. Chloe Moretz stayed exceptionally busy since bursting onto the scene with \u201cKick-Ass\u201d back in 2010, so now it\u2019s only natural that \u201cKick-Ass 2,\u201d \u201cCarrie,\u201d and a slew of highly anticipated upcoming projects would earn her the #2 spot on the list. Finally, it should come as no surprise that the top star of 2013 comes from one of the top movies of 2013, \u201cThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire\u2019s\u201d Jennifer Lawrence. This time last year she was sitting pretty at #2, but since, she\u2019s won an Academy Award and is poised to earn a nomination for another, so she certainly deserved to move up that notch.<\/p>\n

4. Most Overrated:<\/FONT><\/B> Oscar bait and hype go hand-in-hand, but that doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019ve got to roll with it after catching the full feature. Sure, it must have been a challenge for Robert Redford to star in \u201cAll Is Lost\u201d all on his own, but that doesn\u2019t excuse the fact that the film drags primarily due to a lack of sailing information and reasons to care about Redford\u2019s character\u2019s fate. However, not very many people participating in this LA Times poll<\/a> seem to agree with me. \u201cAll Is Lost\u201d is actually in last place while \u201cGravity\u201d and \u201cLee Daniels\u2019s The Butler\u201d are the frontrunners by far with 32.03% and 31.8% of the votes respectively. \u201cSpring Breakers\u201d and \u201cBlue is the Warmest Color\u201d are both featured in The Playlist\u2019s Most Overrated of 2013 piece<\/a> while Punch Drunk Critics<\/a> go after \u201cBlue Jasmine,\u201d \u201cCaptain Phillips\u201d and \u201cInside Llewyn Davis.\u201d JoBlo<\/a> also points a finger at \u201cSpring Breakers\u201d in addition to \u201cThor: The Dark World\u201d and \u201cFast and Furious 6,\u201d and over at Ranker<\/a>, \u201cMan of Steel\u201d sits at the top of their Most Overrated Films of 2013 chart.<\/p>\n

5. Best Scenes:<\/FONT><\/B> The octopus story in \u201cShort Term 12,\u201d the unprecedented sex scene in \u201cHer\u201d and the deadly dinner in \u201cYou\u2019re Next\u201d are all unforgettable, but I\u2019ve got to agree with Film.com<\/a>; the Lemmons overdose in \u201cThe Wolf of Wall Street\u201d is epic. Collider<\/a> put the opening scene of \u201cGravity\u201d on their list in addition to The Mandarin reveal in \u201cIron Man 3\u201d and \u201cLet It Go\u201d from \u201cFrozen.\u201d Oscar Isaac, Justin Timberlake and Adam Driver singing \u201cPlease Mr. Kennedy\u201d in \u201cInside Llewyn Davis\u201d and Solomon\u2019s hanging in \u201c12 Years a Slave\u201d made the cut over at What Culture<\/a> and AV Club<\/a> opted to give the horror genre some love, honoring the hide and clap game from \u201cThe Conjuring\u201d as well as the tug-o-war incident in \u201cMama.\u201d<\/p>\n

6. Best Film You Might Have Missed:<\/FONT><\/B> Considering it only made its way into 75 theaters and has a prime spot on my Top 10 Movies of 2013 list, \u201cShort Term 12\u201d is definitely my pick for a quality movie you might have missed. Forbes<\/a> recommends the horror anthology, \u201cABCs of Death,\u201d as well as a film that should have earned more than $26.9 million at the domestic box office, Ron Howard\u2019s \u201cRush.\u201d The Daily Beast<\/a> pegs Derek Cianfrance\u2019s Toronto International Film Festival entry, \u201cThe Place Beyond the Pines,\u201d as one you missed but shouldn\u2019t have and Wired<\/a> gives that title to two documentaries, \u201cThe Act of Killing\u201d and \u201cStories We Tell,\u201d as well as one of my personal favorite best worst movies of the year, \u201cHansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.\u201d<\/p>\n

7. Best Shots:<\/FONT><\/B> For anyone who appreciates a pretty picture, The Playlist\u2019s \u201cFrame By Frame: The Best Shots Of 2013\u201d<\/a> is a must-read. They\u2019ve got that unforgettable sequence of Solomon Northup\u2019s attempted hanging in \u201c12 Years a Slave\u201d on their list as well as something they\u2019ve dubbed \u201cfetal floating\u201d from \u201cGravity,\u201d the shot where Sandra Bullock\u2019s Dr. Ryan Stone follows up a near-death moment by letting herself strip off the space suit, close her eyes and just float. For \u201cPrisoners\u201d The Playlist runs with a slow dolly on a tree in the Birch\u2019s front yard, but I have to go with a shot that comes up just after the two families realize their girls are missing and they all file out of the living room in a panic, leaving poor Joy Birch in the frame alone. If you\u2019ve got a thing for gore, \u201cEvil Dead\u201d is also brimming with visuals worth freeze-framing, but my single favorite shot of 2013 goes to my favorite film of 2013, \u201cThe Conjuring.\u201d It was tough to pass on the flawless visual that takes us through the Perron house as the family warms up to their new home, but it\u2019s the shot during which James Wan has the camera flip over the second floor railing that sticks with me most. It arrives about an hour and a half into the film and begins with an upside down look at Lorraine running out of the basement door, righting itself as she barrels down the hallway and then continuing on with Drew as he runs across the second floor of the house looking for April. And that\u2019s not all. After one or two shots of Drew checking bedrooms, we move back to that same camera angle to catch Lorraine running back into the house towards the basement door and ending with the upside down viewpoint, increasing the unease and vulnerability before moving into the climax of the film, the exorcism. <\/p>\n

8. Best Poster:<\/FONT><\/B> While I\u2019m partial to the tiny astronaut consumed by the black of space in this \u201cGravity\u201d poster<\/a>, Business Insider<\/a> dubbed designs for \u201cSpring Breakers,\u201d \u201cAnchorman 2: The Legend Continues\u201d and \u201cSide Effects\u201d three of the best posters of the year. First Showing<\/a> named \u201cThe Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,\u201d \u201cThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire\u201d and the parchment painting design for \u201cWolverine\u201d the best of the best while Slant<\/a> put \u201cAin\u2019t Them Bodies Saints\u201d at #3, \u201cOldboy\u201d at #2 and the \u201csprightly one-sheet\u201d for \u201cFrances Ha\u201d at #1.<\/p>\n

9. Best Trailer:<\/FONT><\/B> The outrageous display of greed and poor judgment and the devastating sensation that comes with the potential of being lost in space earned \u201cWolf of Wall Street\u201d and \u201cGravity\u201d spots in my Best Movie Trailers<\/a> piece, but the one that earned the right to be called the best of the best is the exceptional promo for \u201cThe Boxtrolls\u201d that manages to enhance the finished footage by offering a look at what it took to bring the creatures to life. Collider<\/a> also highlighted \u201cWolf\u201d and \u201cGravity,\u201d but gave their top spot to \u201cMan of Steel\u201d while Paste Magazine<\/a> bumped \u201cMan of Steel\u201d down to #5 and gave \u201cThe Grand Budapest Hotel,\u201d \u201cWinter\u2019s Tale\u201d and \u201cX-Men: Days of Future Past\u201d #1, 2 and 3 respectively. The usual suspects popped up on MTV\u2019s list<\/a> as well, the outlet going with \u201cMan of Steel\u201d for #3, tossing \u201cGravity\u201d in at #2 and topping off their list with the preview of Jordan Belfort\u2019s debauchery in the trailer for \u201cWolf of Wall Street.\u201d<\/p>\n

10. Box Office:<\/FONT><\/B> With \u201cFrozen\u201d still going strong and \u201cGravity\u201d heading towards a robust awards season, there\u2019s a good chance both could move up in the rankings, but at the moment, they come in at #7 and #6, \u201cFrozen\u201d with a $248.4 million domestic haul and \u201cGravity\u201d with $254.6 million of its own. \u201cMonsters University\u201d snagged the #5 spot with a total of $268 million, coming in just behind \u201cMan of Steel\u201d and its $291 million total. \u201cDespicable Me 2,\u201d \u201cThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire\u201d and \u201cIron Man 3\u201d are in a league of their own. \u201cDespicable Me 2\u201d concluded its domestic theatrical run with $367.7 million in the bank and \u201cCatching Fire\u201d is at $391 million, but it\u2019s still climbing. In fact, not only is it highly likely that it\u2019ll cross the $400 million mark soon, but it could wind up becoming the top grossing film of the year if it manages to trump \u201cIron Man 3\u2019s\u201d $409 million total before bowing out.
