The television performer, who was also known for writing television scripts for PBS in the beginning of his career, was 65.<\/p>\n<p>After Avery served in the military during the Vietnam War between 1968 and 1969, the actor moved to San Diego, California. While there, he began writing the scripts for the non-profit public broadcaster. The Atlantic City native also wrote poetry for PBS, including the Emmy Award-winning production, \u201cAmeda Speaks: Poet James Avery,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Entertainment\/fresh-prince-star-james-avery-died-65\/story?id=21391201\">ABC<\/a> is reporting.<\/p>\n<p>While receiving acclaim for his writing, Avery was most recognized for his acting. Besides appearing on \u201cThe Fresh Prince of Bel Air,\u201d he also appeared in such films as \u201cDr. Dolittle 2\u201d and \u201cLicense to Drive.\u201d The performer most recently worked on Zach Braff\u2019s comedy-drama, \u201cWish I Was Here,\u201d which will premiere at the Sundance film festival.<\/p>\n<p>Avery was remembered by his \u201cFresh Prince\u201d co-star Alfonso Ribeiro on Twitter, who confirmed the news of his former co-star\u2019s passing:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nI&#8217;m deeply saddened to say that James Avery has passed away. He was a second father to me. I will miss him greatly.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Besides Ribeiro, Avery is survived by his family.
