Our first official summer blockbuster is here and even though \u201cThe Amazing Spider-Man 2<\/strong>\u201d isn\u2019t getting much love from critics, it\u2019s still in good position to pull in a solid chunk of cash. Not only does \u201cSpider-Man\u201d have the first weekend of May all to itself, but it\u2019s also following up a rather weak weekend at the box office so it won\u2019t have any strong veterans to contend with. There\u2019s a very good chance the sequel could trump the first film\u2019s $62 million start with $85 million of its own.<\/p>\n

Even though \u201cThe Other Woman<\/strong>\u201d could be facing a 50% hit, last weekend it had enough of a lead on \u201cCaptain America: The Winter Solider<\/strong>\u201d to suggest that it\u2019ll still manage to maintain enough of its opening profits to secure the #2 spot with a total of $12 million. As for \u201cCaptain America,\u201d \u201cSpider-Man\u201d will absolutely have an effect, but considering \u201cCaptain America\u201d has had such a strong run thus far, \u201cSpider-Man\u201d likely won\u2019t push it beyond a 43% weekend four to five dip, which would let it take another $9 million to the bank.<\/p>\n

Now the question is, will that $9 million be good enough for #3? Whereas \u201cCaptain America\u201d is losing 441 theaters, \u201cHeaven is for Real<\/strong>\u201d is gaining another 225 and if that theater boost has the same effect as last weekend\u2019s added theaters, that means \u201cHeaven is for Real\u201d will only drop 36%, putting it right in line with \u201cCaptain America.\u201d \u201cCaptain America\u201d will still have more theaters than \u201cHeaven is for Real,\u201d but the fact that \u201cHeaven is for Real\u201d will likely have the higher per theater average suggests that it could edge out \u201cCaptain America\u201d for the third spot.<\/p>\n

Even though \u201cSpider-Man\u201d does have a family-friendly appeal, \u201cRio 2<\/strong>\u201d is still in the clear as far as the youngest moviegoers are concerned so it should be able to maintain last weekend\u2019s 37% change. Should that be the case, it\u2019ll lock another $8.5 million and the fifth spot. \u201cBrick Mansions<\/strong>\u201d opened far enough behind \u201cRio 2\u201d and far enough ahead of \u201cTranscendence<\/strong>\u201d to suggest it should have no trouble taking the #6 spot. A $3,595 per theater opening isn\u2019t great, but it still shows that there is interest so the film might only suffer a 45% blow, which would leave it with about $5.5 million for its second weekend out.<\/p>\n

\u201cTranscendence,\u201d on the other hand, is in big trouble. It doesn\u2019t even have a $1 million lead on \u201cThe Quiet Ones<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cBears<\/strong>,\u201d or \u201cDivergent<\/strong>,\u201d so with this weekend\u2019s 1,680-theater loss, it won\u2019t manage to keep ahead of any of them and also runs the risk of falling off the top ten entirely. \u201cThe Quiet Ones\u201d only managed to take $3.9 million its opening weekend, but with no new horror options, it could maintain rather well. If it only dips 40%, it\u2019ll take in another $2.2 million. It\u2019s not much, but still a solid second weekend run considering its weak start. \u201cBears\u201d likely won\u2019t manage to repeat that impressive 21.8% weekend one to two drop, but even if it dips 35%, $2.5 million will still be enough for it to steal the #7 spot from \u201cThe Quiet Ones.\u201d \u201cDivergent\u201d is also due to lose some theaters, but not nearly as many as \u201cTranscendence\u201d so, odds are, it will push \u201cTranscendence\u201d down another spot. If \u201cDivergent\u201d loses 40% making the move from weekend six to seven, it\u2019ll take another $2.1 million to the bank.<\/p>\n

Now here\u2019s where \u201cTranscendence\u201d could finally snag a spot. With that 1,680-theater loss, there\u2019s a good chance \u201cTranscendence\u201d could take a 60% hit all over again. At this point, \u201cGod\u2019s Not Dead\u201d and \u201cDraft Day\u201d are far enough down the chart to not pose a threat, but \u201cA Haunted House 2\u201d will need to take another hefty hit to make room for \u201cTranscendence.\u201d As long as \u201cA Haunted House 2\u201d doesn\u2019t maintain more than 50% of its weekend two profits, which it likely won\u2019t, \u201cTranscendence\u201d will nestle in at #10 with about $1.7 million in total.<\/p>\n
