Data-based on Rotten Tomatoes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Grade:\u00a0 C<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Director:\u00a0 Lance Daly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Screenplay:\u00a0 Lance Daly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cast:\u00a0 Kelly Thornton, Fionnula Flannagan, Pat Shortt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Screened at:\u00a0 Review 1, NYC, 8\/18\/14<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Opens:\u00a0 September 19, 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fionnula Flannagan is cinema\u2019s gift from Ireland, that country\u2019s most engaging actress of a certain age, perhaps the equivalent here in the U.S. of Blythe Danner.\u00a0 But her presence in \u201cLife\u2019s a Breeze,\u201d presumably an ironic title, cannot save the movie from being little more than a sitcom that you might find on commercial TV or, to be magnanimous, on a cable station like HBO.\u00a0 \u201cLife\u2019s a Breeze,\u201d taken from a sign on the wall of the Dublin-area house presided over by Nan (Fionnula Flanagan), is the location of an extended family of the unemployed, the slackers, and of high-spirited citizens who despite their financial hardships find warmth, comfort, and a lot of laughs in their togetherness.<\/p>\n<p>The drama takes root when the family\u2019s comic, Nan\u2019s son Colm (a highly amusing Pat Shortt), gets the group together to rid the place of the clutter, as Nan has saved everything from old newspapers to circulars that are wholly irrelevant to everyone but Nan.\u00a0 Colm conspires with his thirteen-year-old niece Emma (Kelly Thomton) to get Nan out of the house for the day, using the time to renovate.\u00a0 What they did not realize is that the mattress that they discarded contained\u2014so Nan insists\u2014the elderly woman\u2019s life\u2019s savings, amounting to the staggering sum of one million pounds.\u00a0 She did not trust the banks and perhaps she had good reason for her suspicions.<\/p>\n<p>The story turns on an offered reward of 50,000 Euros to the lucky person who can find the mattress, the search becoming a national event televised and broadcast over the radio.\u00a0 The reward money would be based of course, on recovery of the million, but how many persons would be so honest as to turn the bedding in when they have the chance to waltz off with the whole cool million?<\/p>\n<p>The closest parallel to the event here would be Alexander Payne\u2019s film of last year, \u201cNebraska,\u201d in which a booze-addled man with his son in tow go from Montana to Nebraska to claim a Mega jacket of a million dollars.\u00a0 There, the younger man tries unsuccessfully to convince his dad that the million does not exist.\u00a0 In \u201cLife\u2019s a Breeze,\u201d the son tries at first to convince his mom that she must be exaggerating, but he and the rest of the family, seeing how serious Nan is, plunge into the race to recover the mattress, searching all the local dumps and recycling plants while the TV and newspapers follow the chase.<\/p>\n<p>To an extent, the mattress provides an excuse to let us in the audience eavesdrop on ordinary family life during the hard times in Ireland, when scores of men and women line up to fill out forms for the dole.\u00a0 Especially troublesome is the way that Emma is given school lunches at home made up of a slice of plain white bread and a banana daily.\u00a0 The special relationship is between Nan and her granddaughter, a thirteen-year-old and an eighty-year-old who trust each other, Emma who is innocent and Nan who is too worldly-wise, the two willing to do everything needed for each other\u2019s welfare.<\/p>\n<p>Like writer-director Lance Daly\u2019s 2004 word \u201cThe Halo Effect,\u201d \u201cLife\u2019s a Breeze\u201d is a run-of-the-mill pic but this one featuring a solid performance by newcomer Kelly Thornton, and a slacker son played by Pat Shortt who can evoke audience smiles simply by showing up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rated R.\u00a0 83 minutes.\u00a0 \u00a9 2014 by Harvey Karten, Member, New York Film Critics Online<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Story \u2013 C<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Acting \u2013 B<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Technical \u2013 B<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Overall &#8211; C<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lifes-a-Breeze-Movie.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lifes-a-Breeze-Movie.jpg\" alt=\"Lifes a Breeze Movie\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-145812\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lifes-a-Breeze-Movie.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lifes-a-Breeze-Movie-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LIFE\u2019S A BREEZE Magnolia Pictures Reviewed for Shockya by Harvey Karten.
