{"id":147035,"date":"2014-10-19T06:58:09","date_gmt":"2014-10-19T13:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/?p=147035"},"modified":"2014-10-19T06:58:09","modified_gmt":"2014-10-19T13:58:09","slug":"for-greater-glory-movie-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/2014\/10\/19\/for-greater-glory-movie-review\/","title":{"rendered":"For Greater Glory Movie Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Title: For Greater Glory<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Director: Dean Wright<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Starring: Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria, Eduardo Verastegui, Rub\u00e9n Blades, Peter O\u2019Toole.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The director (and visual effects supervisor) who is best known for fantasy movies such as \u2018The Lord of the Rings\u2019 trilogy, and \u2018The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe,\u2019 tackles an important and neglected moment in history: the Cristero War.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLa Cristiada\u201d was an attempted counter-revolution against anti-clericalism of the ruling Mexican government. During the 1920s, the country was thrust into civil war when President Plutarco Calles outlawed Catholicism, banned religious activity, confiscated all church property and exiled clergy. Priests and nuns that protested were arrested or publicly executed and hung on display from roadside posts. Rebel factions formed by schoolboys to farmers to artisans rose up and thus started the Cristero War.<\/p>\n<p>Although this part of history, that usually isn\u2019t part of school\u2019s programs, could have been interesting, the plot of \u2018For Greater Glory\u2019 spares no cliches. We have a tight-knit family divided by politics, a sensitive priest urging children to fight for their beliefs, the atheist legendary General Gorostieta who is hired to lead the directionless rebels against Calles and will somehow be touched by the heavenly light and the indoctrinated kid who embodies the Lamb of God.<\/p>\n<p>The speed of narration is highly antiquate, and has the flavour of a rambling political biopic that aspires to the long gone old-Hollywood romanticism.<\/p>\n<p>The actors are pretty good (Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria, Eduardo Verastegui, Rub\u00e9n Blades, Peter O\u2019Toole) although the heavy-handed message of proselytism gives an irksome depiction of Mexico\u2019s Cristero War.<\/p>\n<p>If understandably the US got the immediate release, it took almost two years \u00a0 for the movie to get distribution in European countries such as Italy, albeit the Bel paese\u2019s Catholic Weltanschauung is in line with that of the movie.<\/p>\n<p><b>Technical: B-<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Acting: B-<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Story: C<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Overall: C+<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Written by: Chiara Spagnoli Gabardi<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/For-Greater-Glory-Movie-Review.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/For-Greater-Glory-Movie-Review.jpg\" alt=\"For Greater Glory Movie Review\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-147389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/For-Greater-Glory-Movie-Review.jpg 548w, https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/For-Greater-Glory-Movie-Review-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 548px) 100vw, 548px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Title: For Greater Glory Director: Dean Wright Starring: Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria, Eduardo Verastegui, Rub\u00e9n Blades, Peter O\u2019Toole. Chiara\u2019s \u201cMaterial Puns\u201d use wordplay to weld the title of the painting with the materials placed on canvas, through an ironic reinterpretation of Pop-Art, Dadaism and Ready Made. She exhibited her artwork in Milan, Rome, Venice, London, Oxford, Paris and Manhattan. Chiara works as a reporter for online, print, radio and television and also as a film festival PR\/publicist. As a bi-lingual journalist (English and Italian), who is also fluent in French and Spanish, she is a member of the Foreign Press Association in New York, the Women Film Critics Circle in New York, the Italian Association of Journalists in Milan and the Federation of Film Critics of Europe and the Mediterranean.
