Data-based on Rotten Tomatoes.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Grade:\u00a0 C+<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Director:\u00a0 Simon West<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Screenwriter:\u00a0 William Goldman from the novel \u201cHeat\u201d by William Goldman<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Cast:\u00a0 Jason Statham, Michael Angarano, Milo Ventimiglia, Dominik Garcia-Lorido, Anne Heche, Sofia Vergara<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Screened at:\u00a0 Dolby24, NYC, 1\/20\/15<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Opens:\u00a0 January 30, 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If this is the best script that William Goldman can scratch out from his novel \u201cHeat,\u201d either he is wrongfully reinterpreting his own work or at the age of eighty-three he is slipping.\u00a0 After all, Goldman, who has churned out Academy-award winning scripts, responsible for \u201cButch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,\u201d \u201cAll The President\u2019s Men,\u201d \u201cMarathon Man\u201d (which made us fear dentists even more that we are accustomed to doing), cannot seriously think that his script for \u201cWild Card\u201d has any claim to originality. Fighting scenes lack credibility despite his use of a Hong Kong choreographer, and the principal character\u2019s sidekick who may be modeled on Facebook\u2019s Zuckerberg is too dorkish to be credible.<\/p>\n<p>Using the standard-issue security professional Nick Escalante to fashion a noirish drama that at least does not outlast its welcome, Goldman\u2019s story is directed by Simon West, whose \u201cCon Air\u201d finds a plane commandeered by prisoners and who locates a woman heroine in \u201cLara Croft: Tomb Raider,\u201d pursuing adventures to recover stolen artifacts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWild Card\u201d is yet another revenge fantasy thriller paired with a buddy drama, the two separate themes coalescing only marginally.\u00a0 Nick Escalante aka Nick Wild (Jason Statham) is sought out by a heavily bruised woman (Dominik Garcia-Lorido) who had been raped and beaten by a gangster (Milo Ventimiglia) and tossed out of a vehicle outside an emergency room.\u00a0 At the same time he is approached for assistance by Cyrus Kinnick (Michael Angarano), who like the cowardly lion in \u201cThe Wizard of Oz\u201d needs to be taught bravery.\u00a0 Kinnick had been nonplussed by an elderly man he saw in his home city with a sign on his back saying, \u201cPlease don\u2019t hit me,\u201d which sounds like a reversal of those taped messages that high-school kids would place on the backs of the bullied with the opposite goal.\u00a0 Kinnick fears growing old and facing the same degradation. He follows his new hero around to watch him take on three, four, five hoodlums.\u00a0 Nick never carries a gun and in one climactic fight scene he virtually laughs at the thugs carrying firearms as he takes them on with only his fists and a butter knife.\u00a0 For nutrition he relies on grapefruit juice (when he\u2019s not imbibing vodka).<\/p>\n<p>What romance exists is simply Nick\u2019s friendship with several women in the Vegas gambling casinos where most of the action takes place\u2014with one Cassandra (Hope Davis) serving as blackjack croupier actually hoping that she would lose to the big lug despite the latter\u2019s bet of $500,000.\u00a0 (The big bet is Nick\u2019s chance to live his dream, to retire in Corsica for which he would need a cool million, and cinematographer Shelly Johnson behind the Fotokem lens actually shoots brief scenes on that expensive island.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWild Card\u201d is essentially DVD fare though even those who wait for the video will find the action scenes too brief with too much rambling conversation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rated R.\u00a0 92 minutes.\u00a0 \u00a9 Harvey Karten, Member, New York Film Critics Online<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Story \u2013 C<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Acting \u2013 C+<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Technical \u2013 B<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Overall \u2013 C+<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/wc.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/wc.jpg\" alt=\"wc\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-150552\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/wc.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/wc-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WILD CARD Lionsgate Reviewed for Shockya by Harvey Karten.
