Data-based on Rotten Tomatoes.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Grade:\u00a0 B+<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Director:\u00a0 Maxime Giroux<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Screenwriter:\u00a0 Maxime Giroux, Alexandre Lafferi\u00e8re<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Cast:\u00a0 Martin Dubreuil, Hadas Yaron, Luzer Twersky<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Screened at:\u00a0 Review 1, NYC, 1\/22\/15<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Opens:\u00a0 2015 TBD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We secular folks without parohocial ties should try not to be smug.\u00a0 There is much to be said for belonging to a group based on religion such as Haredis (Hasidim) or Amish, or what-have-you.\u00a0 There is a feeling of togetherness that\u2019s difficult to find among more urban, cosmopolitan people.\u00a0 There is the paradoxical freedom in knowing exactly what is expected of you, what should constitute your life.\u00a0 However some people born into such a group do not fit in.\u00a0 In the vast majority of cases, they do not outwardly rebel, perhaps because the devil they know is the more appealing than the devil they do not.\u00a0 This is what makes Meira (Israeli actress Hadas Yaron) so different.\u00a0 Meira, known by her Jewish name Malka, is born into a Haredi family in Montreal, and unlike other women in her insular community does not want more than the one baby that she enjoys, a most unusual idea when having five, ten, even fourteen children is considered a mitzvah (a duty).<\/p>\n<p>Her husband Shulem (Luzer Twersky) is frustrated by her behavior, particularly her listening to pop music when such is not considered kosher.\u00a0 He feels put upon by having to justify her outlier behavior.\u00a0 But she is drowning and, in fact, even teases her husband by playing dead, dropping down to the floor and holding her breath.\u00a0 But she is going to get her chance to get a breath of fresh air when she meets a man, F\u00e9lix, who is similarly an outsider, one who states that he does not know who he is, and who has been estranged for ten years from his now dying father.\u00a0 When F\u00e9lix and Meira meet in a Montreal bakery, there are no sparks.\u00a0 Director Maxime Giroux makes sure to unfold the story slowly, casually, tentatively.\u00a0 At first Meira does not have eye contact with this new stranger since that is prohibited to Haredi women except to their husbands, but gradually, as he opens her eyes to the world outside the community, she becomes emboldened all the more to break away from a life that is quite satisfactory and then some to a majority of Haredi women but not suitable for Meira.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cF\u00e9lix et Meira\u201d is unconventional to the extent that Giroux, directing from a screenplay that the 38-year-old Quebec filmmaker co-wrote with Alexandre Lafferi\u00e8re, would suddenly supply a black-and-white concert by a Black duet to a bopping white audience. Similarly the script calls for F\u00e9lix to introduce Meira to a gypsy-style dance hall in Brooklyn in which two local comment that F\u00e9lix \u201cdances like a vacuum cleaner\u201d and could use some lessons.<\/p>\n<p>The movie, which closed the 2015 Jewish film festival, finds the black-sheep couple moving from Montreal to Williamsburg neighborhood in Brooklyn where F\u00e9lix is confronted by Shulem, the outcome of their meeting to help determine whether Meira will make the break official and thereby be banned from the Haredi community in Montreal forever.\u00a0 The deliberate pace may turn off fans of faster-moving pictures on similar themes like Boaz Yakin\u2019s 1998 \u201cThe Price of Rubies,\u201d in which a young Hasidic woman trained as a jeweler is married unhappily to a religious scholar, and Sidney Lumet\u2019s \u201cA Stranger Among Us,\u201d in which a worldly, cynical cop goes undercover in the Hasidic community to investigate a murder.\u00a0 There\u2019s little of Hollywood in \u201cF\u00e9lix et Meira,\u201d in which characters speak Yiddish, French and English, and that\u2019s to its credit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unrated.\u00a0 105 minutes.\u00a0 \u00a9 Harvey Karten, Member, New York Film Critics Online<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Story \u2013 B+<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Acting \u2013 B+<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Technical \u2013 B<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Overall \u2013 B+<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/faa.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/faa.jpg\" alt=\"faa\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-150556\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/faa.jpg 920w, https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/faa-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 920px) 100vw, 920px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>F\u00c9LIX ET MEIRA Oscilloscope Reviewed for Shockya by Harvey Karten.
