Perry<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Cast:\u00a0 Ryan Reynolds, Jacki Weaver, Gemma Arterton, Anna Kendrick<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Screened at:\u00a0 Crosby Hotel, NYC, 2\/2\/15<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Opens:\u00a0 February 6, 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s reason to be envious of schizophrenics.\u00a0 They\u2019re never lonely.\u00a0 They hear voices whether the words come from imaginary people or their real dogs or cats.\u00a0 Now you can know exactly what your pet thinks of you. In \u201cThe Voices,\u201d a schizo who happens to be the nicest serial killer you\u2019ll see in the movies in recent years, knows that his cat considers him to be a loser and his dog, by contrast defends him\u2014which is the way most dogs and cats feel about their human companions.\u00a0 He considers himself to be a good guy: a psychotic killer may indeed have high self-esteem and charm.\u00a0 Think Ted Bundy.\u00a0 All this makes for an intriguing look at a movie that like so many others (\u201cWild Tales\u201d comes to mind immediately) mixes genres, in this case comedy with murder.\u00a0 It works, especially since Ryan Reynolds, who hears opinions impartially all about him, good and bad, comes across as nothing less than a good guy.<\/p>\n<p>Iranian-born director Marjane Satrapi, best known for \u201cPersepolis\u201d about a young, outspoken Iranian girl during the unfortunate revolution in that country, this time tackles a theme removed from her previous work, a comic look at a fella who thrice kills people he knows and likes because his cat encourages him.\u00a0 The feline charmer notes that in its own case, he feels most alive when hunting and killing, which is true enough about creatures who prey on the weaker animals, so why wouldn\u2019t this be a valid conclusion for the human animal?\u00a0 (Don\u2019t we love to see films of extreme violence?)\u00a0 Further, the cat, Mr. Whiskers, advises Jerry Hickfang (Ryan Reynolds) to stop taking his meds, which his court-appointed psychotherapist Dr. Warren (Jacki Weaver) insists that he swallow lest she reports him to the parole people, sending him back to the looney bin to which he was remanded after helping to kill his mom. (Norman Bates, anyone?)<\/p>\n<p>And like a good industrial soldier he listens to the cat who advises that without drugs, life is groovy, a Technicolor kaleidoscope.\u00a0 Pop pill and the world turns gray.\u00a0 Maybe we\u2019re better off living in gray, given that shucking meds in this case leads Jerry\u2014who is made up to look like Anthony Perkins in \u201cPsycho\u201d\u2014sends the man on a murderous path, attacking people he likes, who like him, and who want only the best for him.\u00a0 They include British- born co-worker Fiona (Gemma Arterton), Lisa (Anna Kendrick) from the accounting department where Jerry works in packing and shipping, and his psychotherapist.<\/p>\n<p>Killing has rarely had such a comic look.\u00a0 Satrapi paints the workers\u2019 uniforms in pink, and the credits appear in pastels.\u00a0 Don\u2019t leave when you think the movie has concluded.\u00a0 A highlight occurs during the credits when Jerry, his victims and his parents dance to an upbeat tune as though to say that all is forgiven.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rated R.\u00a0 103 minutes.\u00a0 \u00a9 Harvey Karten, Member, New York Film Critics Online<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Story \u2013 B+<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Acting \u2013 B<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Technical \u2013 A-<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Overall \u2013 B+<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/tv.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/tv.jpg\" alt=\"tv\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-150560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/tv.jpg 1600w, https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/tv-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/tv-1024x651.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE VOICES Lionsgate Reviewed for Shockya by Harvey Karten.
