Data-based on Rotten Tomatoes.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Grade:\u00a0 C+<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Director:\u00a0 Richard Laxton<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Screenwriter:\u00a0 Emma Thompson<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Cast:\u00a0 Dakota Fanning, Greg Wise, Tom Sturridge, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Screened at:\u00a0 Dolby88, NYC, 2\/12\/15<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve come a way from the culture of Victorian England.\u00a0 If you\u2019re not a fan of history and you think that Victorian England is a branch of Victoria\u2019s Secret, you\u2019d be wise to see two films: one involving a chap named Gray, another about a fellow named Grey.\u00a0 When you compare the morals and mores embraced by the two movies, you\u2019d think you\u2019ve gone from Venus to Mars: that\u2019s how different both stories are from mainstream America.\u00a0 As for which film you\u2019d probably prefer, I\u2019m guessing the American one, since notwithstanding the flaws of \u201cFifty Shades of Grey,\u201d there\u2019s considerably more entertainment value in that then in the one named \u201cEffie Gray,\u201d which could have been entitled \u201cOne Shade of Gray.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Virtually everyone in Richard Laxton\u2019s vision, based on the true story of the marriage of 19-year-old Euphemia \u201cEffie\u201d Gray is of one shade.\u00a0 The title character played by Dakota Fanning looks throughout as though she is posing for a Daguerrotype or a portrait by Mr. Turner. With her big sparkling eyes she looks lost and confused, though to be fair, with the husband she chose\u2014never mind his celebrity status&#8211; one can\u2019t blame her.\u00a0 Her husband John Ruskin\u2014famous to this day as an art critic, a writer on sundry subjects, and a watercolor painter\u2014refused to consummate the marriage throughout its six years\u2019 time.\u00a0 Nobody knows the reason, though folks have guessed that he was Gay, perhaps impotent, disgusted by her pubic hair or her menstrual blood.\u00a0 Needless to say, a 19-year-old, already watching her most vital years gone, would be, to paraphrase Jane Austen, a woman who must be in want of a husband.<\/p>\n<p>The plot is simple, essentially a 19-year-old virgin marries a celebrity (the latter played by Emma Thompson\u2019s real-life, 41-year-old husband).\u00a0 John Ruskin (Greg Wise) becomes increasingly disgusted by the young woman, while Effie Gray (Dakota Fanning) is bewildered that he \u201cdid not make me his wife.\u201d\u00a0 Effie is counseled by Lady Eastlake (Emma Thompson), who sounds like a 21st century feminist, asking Effie \u201cwhat are you when you are not Mrs. John Ruskin?\u201d but acceding to the rigid code of Victorian behavior by advising that \u201cthere is no way out.\u201d In other words, marriage in 19th Century England is for life.\u00a0 She soon asks around, hiring a doctor (Robbie Coltrane) to certify that Effie is a virgin and then hiring Travers Twiss (Derek Jacobi), a lawyer, to take action to annul the marriage.\u00a0 Meanwhile Effie\u2019s eyes are elsewhere, particularly on painter John Everett Millais (Tom Sturridge), whom she marries in real life and presents him with eight children\u2014perhaps material for a sequel.<\/p>\n<p>The plot is not the thing.\u00a0 The film purports instead to show the rigidities of Victorian life: the social pressure to avoid divorce or annulment at all costs, the men\u2019s club aspects among the upper classes, the comparative freedom in Italy shown through the unhappy couple\u2019s trip to Venice, and especially the portrait of Margaret Cox Ruskin (Julie Walters) as the mother-in-law from hell who does not approve of her son\u2019s marriage, perhaps because she wants to continue bathing him.\u00a0 Whether a bride should live with her husband\u2019s parents may work today in India, but is hardly advisable to Westerners whether they be Effie Gray or anyone in our own century.<\/p>\n<p>Surely there is a character other than Emma Thompson\u2019s who could have breathed life into this middlebrow presentation?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Story \u2013 B<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Acting \u2013 C<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Technical \u2013 B<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Overall \u2013 C+<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Rated PG-13.\u00a0 108 minutes.\u00a0 \u00a9 Harvey Karten, Member, New York Film Critics Online<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/eg2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/eg2.jpg\" alt=\"effie gray review dakota\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-150658\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/eg2.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/eg2-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/eg2-1024x614.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EFFIE GRAY Adopt Films Reviewed for Shockya by Harvey Karten.
