Tolkien\u2019s \u201cThe Lord of the Rings\u201d\u2014must not only hit hard against its targets but even more important must be rattling good stories as well.\u00a0 Korn\u00e9l\u00a0 Mundrucz\u00f3\u2019s \u201cWhite God,\u201d or \u201cFeh\u00e9r isten\u201d in its original Hungarian, may be admitted to that company.\u00a0 As political allegory, it preaches against racial, religious, and ethnic discrimination by positing a society that requires owners of \u201cundesirable\u201d mixed breed dogs to pay a special tax or mandates them to deliver their mutts to a shelter.\u00a0 \u201cWhite God\u201d is a horror film in the tradition of Alfred Hitchcock\u2019s \u201cThe Birds\u201d (birds in Northern California attack people with increasing viciousness) and Lewis Teague\u2019s \u201cCujo\u201d (a friendly St. Bernard contracts rabies and inflicts violence on the people of a small American town).\u00a0 And \u201cWhite God\u201d is a coming-of-age drama like John Hughes\u2019 \u201cFerris Bueller\u2019s Day Off\u201d (a high school senior is determined to have a day off no matter what the principal says) and John Hughes \u201cThe Breakfast Club\u201d (a motley crew of high school students in detention learn that they have more in common than they thought).<\/p>\n<p>And \u201cWhite God\u201d is wonderful as a story, complete with one of Hungary\u2019s most nationalistic pieces of music, a cast of over two hundred remarkably well-trained dogs, and splendid editing that allows an audience to believe that these four-legged, abandoned creatures can inflict well-deserved mortal harm on human beings who have done them wrong.<\/p>\n<p>An opening foreshadows that thirteen-year-old Lili (Zs\u00f3fia Psotta) is being either pursued or followed by the two hundred mongrels.\u00a0 The movie is right up director Korn\u00e9l Mundrucz\u00f3\u2019s alley, since his recent film \u201cTender Son: The Frankenstein Project,\u201d which examines the life of a boy newly released from an institution who finds that he is not wanted at home.\u00a0 In the same respect Lili is being dropped off by her traveling mother for a three-months\u2019 stay with her dad, D\u00e1niel (S\u00e1ndor Zs\u00f3t\u00e9r).\u00a0 D\u00e1niel, a former professor who is now a meat inspector\u2014first shown giving his stamp of approval to the carcass of a newly slaughtered cow who innard drop to the floor like so much trash\u2014is in no mood to receive this small guest, nor does he welcome Lili\u2019s dog, Hagen.\u00a0 D\u00e1niel demonstrates cruelty to animals not only by participating in the slaughter industry but in dumping Hagen into the streets rather than pay a tax that the city of Budapest has passed against dogs of mixed breed.\u00a0 Therein lies the political allegory.<\/p>\n<p>Director Mundrucz\u00f3 has little use for an army of dog catchers, though they are just doing their jobs, as they round up the city strays putting them in an overcrowded shelter managed by a (can you guess?) cruel woman.\u00a0 Hagen, by contrast, is picked up by a man who names the dog Max, trains the dog to fight, and is pleased when the mongrel wins his first fight, leaving his opponent a bloody mess.\u00a0 The drama picks up considerably when over two hundred dogs, now including Hagen, break out from the shelter and rampage through the city streets, avenging themselves by causing several human deaths.\u00a0 Police shoot a score of the animals dead while Lili shows that there are more peaceful means to calm the warriors.\u00a0 Hence the horror theme.<\/p>\n<p>As Lili is herself a rebellious teen, calling her father a jerk and her \u201cWhiplash\u201d style music director heartless, \u201cWhite God\u201d covers coming-of-age territory.\u00a0 The three genres are so deftly intermeshed, so cleverly filmed by Marcell Rev using a dog\u2019s eye view, and spectacularly edited by David Jancso, that the technical aspects combined with newcomer Zs\u00f3fia Psotta\u2019s natural performance, that it\u2019s no wonder that the movie garnered the Un Certain Regard prize at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rated R.\u00a0 119 minutes.\u00a0 \u00a9 Harvey Karten, Member, New York Film Critics Online<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Story \u2013 B+<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Acting \u2013 A-<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Technical \u2013 A<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Overall \u2013A-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/wh.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/wh.jpg\" alt=\"wh\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-151122\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/wh.jpg 986w, https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/wh-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 986px) 100vw, 986px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WHITE GOD\u00a0 (Feh\u00e9r isten) Magnolia Pictures Reviewed by: Harvey Karten for Shockya.
