Databased on Rotten Tomatoes.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Grade: B+<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Director: Juan Feldman<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Screenwriter:\u00a0 Juan Feldman (story), Joel Silverman (screenplay)<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Cast:\u00a0 Marcia Gay Harden, \u00d3scar Jaenada, Jenna Ortega, Ron Canada, Jackie Torres<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Screened at: Critics\u2019 DVD, NYC, 7\/24\/15<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Opens:\u00a0 August 21, 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hip travelers know that the best place to go on vacation is to Costa Rica.\u00a0 This tropical paradise has perhaps the world\u2019s most eco-friendly government, one which refuses to sell out to the timber industry.\u00a0 Sights both on the Caribbean and the Pacific\u2014to say nothing of the country\u2019s center\u2014are outstanding.\u00a0 In this small, mountainous country not far from any point in the United States you can watch crocodiles being fed, volcanoes that threaten to erupt, and can take rides on funiculars through rain forests as well as on the well-known zip lines.\u00a0 And the tourist does not get robbed blind: four-star hotels in the capital of San Jos\u00e9 offer suites with private Jacuzzis for $130 a night while exotic resorts deep in the rain forest can be picked up for a sum that middle-income Americans might afford.<\/p>\n<p>But here\u2019s the best thing about that magical place: you can throw away your anti-depressants.\u00a0 At least that\u2019s what Juan Feldman and Joel Silverman, director and scripter would have us believe, with \u201cAfter Words,\u201d essentially a two-hander featuring remarkable performances by Marcia Gay Harden as a terminally depressed California librarian who goes to Costa Rica with intentions to commit suicide there, and \u00d3scar Jaenada who serves as her tour guide with a personality as extroverted as the tourist\u2019s is wrapped up in herself.<\/p>\n<p>What emerges during the hour and a half is not only believable but could serve as an extended product placement for the Costa Rica Tourist Board, and could leave a smile on your face a mile long and a kilometer-and-a-half wide.<\/p>\n<p>Jane (Marcia Gay Harden) has just been told that her library has lost its funding.\u00a0 She\u2019s out of a job but is to go through with her plan to travel from Santa Monica to Costa Rica for what could be her last vacation.\u00a0 Her depression shows through her frizzy hair and a face betraying no emotion other than sadness.\u00a0 She encounters Juan (\u00d3scar Jaenada), the typically ebullient tour guide who is putting his bright daughter through an expensive American school but makes most of his income as a male hooker.\u00a0 Kidded by his pals who take bets on when he will \u201cget into the pants\u201d of his latest customer, he is stunned when, having already paid him $75 for private touring, Jane hands over the $500 tuition he owes to the school.<\/p>\n<p>Juan is a good man.\u00a0 He will not take the money without working for it, and takes on the job of being her guide for the rest of her time in the Central American country.\u00a0 Though the trajectory is predictable, the dialogue, particularly the dryly comic exchanges between the two who are so opposite in personality, forms the delicious entertainment of the story while lush forests and beaches take on the role of romantic backdrop.\u00a0 \u201cAfter Words\u201d is filmed in location in Quepos and Manuel Antonio Park on the Pacific side and Puerto Viejo and Tortuguera on the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<p>U<strong>nrated.\u00a0 91 minutes.\u00a0 \u00a9 Harvey Karten, Member, New York Film Critics Online<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Story \u2013 B+<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Acting \u2013 A-<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Technical \u2013 A-<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Overall \u2013 B+<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/rhk.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/rhk.jpg\" alt=\"rhk\" width=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-154068\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/rhk.jpg 638w, https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/rhk-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AFTER WORDS Level 33 Entertainment Reviewed by: Harvey Karten for Shockya.
