Databased on Rotten Tomatoes.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Grade: C+<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Director:\u00a0 Veronika Franz, Severin Fiala<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Written by:\u00a0 Veronika Franz, Severin Fiala<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Cast: Susanne Wuest, Elias Schwarz, Lukas Schwarz<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Screened at: Review 2, NYC, 11\/19\/15<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Opens:\u00a0 September 11, 2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re just starting out in your married life and you think of having kids (as most couples do), you may be concerned about the cost of bringing one up from prenatal expenses to those of a living creation to age 21 and, nowadays, beyond.\u00a0 But money isn\u2019t everything.\u00a0 Remember the old saw about how a young person killed his parents and threw himself on the mercy of the court because he was an orphan?\u00a0 Yes, you ought to think of what the young \u2018un might do to you if he doesn\u2019t get everything his way.\u00a0 To reinforce that point, there\u2019s a movie that could make you change your mind about spreading your seed, and it\u2019s a horror film, \u201cGoodnight Mommy,\u201d with the less effective title in the original Austrian German, \u201cIch she, Ich she\u2014which means \u201cI see, I see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The English language title probably gives away what\u2019s going to happen, but it\u2019s the getting there that\u2019s the thing, because the journey is more important than the arrival.\u00a0 Though no monsters come out of a person\u2019s stomach and no massive slashing takes place, the story builds up slowly before it reaches the gore that could make many an audience member look away.\u00a0 And it\u2019s Austria\u2019s entry into the foreign language best picture competition for the 88th annual Academy Awards show.\u00a0 This could mean either that Austria does not have a vast array of impressive films to choose from or that the German-speaking nation really believes in the tension that Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala create.<\/p>\n<p>The three-hander opens as twin brothers Elias (Elias Schwarz) and Lukas (Lukas Schwarz) are stunned upon seeing their mother (Susanne Wuest) come home with her face wrapped in bandages after cosmetic surgery.\u00a0 Because their mom starts acting weird, for example punishing the lads for minor offenses and demanding absolute silence in the house to allow her to get doctor-advised rest, they being to suspect that the woman is an imposter, not their real mom.\u00a0 After the kids spot a picture that features their mother together with an unknown woman wearing the same clothes and looking pretty much alike, their suspicions are raised to such an extent that they escalate their own weirdness.\u00a0 You\u2019ll note that Lukas appears to be mute, whispering nothings into his brother Elias\u2019s ear, which makes one unsurprised that the mother (or whoever) ignores the silent one and demands that Elias not speak any more to his sib.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the brothers, who collect giant beetles, hide a stray cat under the bed, and spend all their time with each other outside their home in the remote Austrian countryside, are determined to expose the bandaged woman. They tie her to the bed, seal her mouth with crazy-glue, and interrogate her with methods that the Gestapo would only envy.\u00a0 One brother captures the sun\u2019s rays in a magnifying glass to torture the woman into a confession, leaving a scar on her face, though we wonder why the kids could not simply quiz the lass about events in their lives.\u00a0 The torture scene escalates.<\/p>\n<p>This is a marginally effective movie without the intricate plot lines of a much better one, \u201cFunny Games,\u201d by fellow Austrian Michael Haneke, though watching these brats at work becomes tedious as they are not particular clever or witty or adept at issuing bon mots.\u00a0 The dialogue is in German with mediocre, white subtitles, not always easy to read.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rated R.\u00a0 99 minutes.\u00a0 \u00a9 Harvey Karten, Member, New York Film Critics Online<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Story \u2013 C<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Acting \u2013 C+<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Technical \u2013 C+<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Overall \u2013 C+<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/gnm.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/gnm.jpg\" alt=\"gnm\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-156873\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/gnm.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/gnm-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GOODNIGHT MOMMY\u00a0 Ich seh, Ich seh The Weinstein Company Reviewed by: Harvey Karten for Shockya.
