Smith, Alejandro Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu<br \/>\nCast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson<br \/>\nScreened at: Regal Union Square, NYC, 11\/24\/15<br \/>\nOpens:\u00a0 December 25, 2015 and wide January 8, 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most famous stage direction invented by Shakespeare is \u201cExit, pursued by a bear,\u201d which in Act III scene iii of \u201cThe Winter\u2019s Tale\u201d presages the death of Antigonus.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know whether in the original 17th century version the Bard used a real trained bear, or a man in a bear\u2019s costume, or something that worked as a special effect at London\u2019s Globe theater, but ol\u2019 Will would be amazed if he could have seen what happens to Leonardo DiCaprio in \u201cThe Revenant.\u201d\u00a0 Director, co-writer and producer Alejandoro Gonz\u00e1lez I\u00f1\u00e1rritu, well known by cinephiles for his \u201cBirdman,\u201d which features Michael Keaton as a popular actor trying to deal with the problems of his current life, now puts his skill on creating a dramatic biopic of fur trapper Hugh Glass (played by DiCaprio) who, in 1823 in an area which became the Dakota Territory, is brutally attacked and mauled by a bear while scouting for an expedition.\u00a0 What emerges during the long 156-minutes\u2019 narrative may bring kudos, even an Oscar nomination for cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki\u2014who films in such exotic areas as Chile\u2019s Tierra del Fuego and also parts of Alberta,\u00a0 British Columbia and Montana\u2014but is an agonizing film to sit through.\u00a0 Relatively static, with dialogue that consists largely of a variety of grunts and groans from the mauled Glass, \u201cThe Revenant\u201d (which means \u201che who returns from the dead\u201d) is a revenge story involving largely a two hundred mile chase in the snow by a half-dead Glass and by the object of his fury, John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy), who leaves him for dead, kills his half-Indian son, and robs him of his furs.<\/p>\n<p>In the novel by Michael Punke (2002) on which the movie is based, Glass is motivated principally not by revenge but simply by a desire to get his furs back.\u00a0 But revenge makes for a more engaging movie, or so the team that assembled the movie must have thought.\u00a0 But box office does not look promising, with the film bringing in an audience of DiCaprio fans but with those folks perhaps leaving the theater frustrated with the slow progress and dialogue-challenged sounds coming from the theater\u2019s array of loudspeakers.<\/p>\n<p>Solid cinematography aside, \u201cThe Revenant\u201d does give us a picture of life on our continent in the early part of the Nineteenth Century, absent McDonald\u2019s and ever-expanding co-ops and condos.\u00a0 The one riveting scene in the film\u2014and the only one\u2014is that of Glass being mauled over and over by a big brown bear who doesn\u2019t take \u201cno\u201d for an answer when his prey remains alive but goes on the attack a second time.\u00a0 He should have quit while he was ahead since we in the audience know who is going to win the fight, but as the bear might have said to his spouse had he remained walking in the snow, \u201cYou should have seen the other guy.\u201d\u00a0 While the racist fur trader John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy), no lover of Native Americans, puts his weapon where his mouth is and kills Glass\u2019s son, the stage is set for the big chase, as Glass stalks his prey using the silly rifles which, in addition to arrows and knives served about all the weapons of mild destruction at the time.\u00a0 As Lubitzki\u2019s lenses move from Fitzgerald\u2019s camp, always on the lookout from Pawney Indians with their perfectly aimed arrows, then back to a solitary Glass, we sit in assorted stages of agony wondering why DiCaprio passed on a script starring a bear and instead took on the guise of a wolf\u2014on Wall Street.<\/p>\n<p>Rated R.\u00a0 156 minutes.\u00a0 \u00a9 Harvey Karten, Member, New York Film Critics Online<\/p>\n<p><strong>Picture &#8211; C<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Acting &#8211; B-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Technical &#8211; B+<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Overall &#8211; C<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/the-revenant-bear.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-157161\" alt=\"the revenant bear rape\" src=\"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/the-revenant-bear.jpg\" width=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/the-revenant-bear.jpg 615w, https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/the-revenant-bear-300x161.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 615px) 100vw, 615px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE REVENANT 20th Century Fox Reviewed by: Harvey Karten for Shockya.
