this look at the music and dance of Argentina to be a plethora of tangos, you\u2019re mistaken, because Carlos Saura does not do clich\u00e9s.\u00a0 The eighty-four year old Saura is one of Spain\u2019s most prolific documentarians, having covered topics of Spanish interest including his 2010 \u201cFlamenco, Flamenco,\u201d which covers what I consider the world\u2019s most passionate dance, and \u201cBodas de sangre, which is a great tragedy written by Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca.\u00a0 Saura himself, however, considers his \u201cBu\u00f1uel at King Solomon\u2019s Table\u201d to be his best work, based on his interviews with the late Spanish director, though as he says, \u201cNobody else liked it.\u201d\u00a0 If you\u2019ve never heard of Saura , you may be surprised to discover that he has contributed something to the world\u2019s cinema almost every year, sometimes twice, and has been nominated and awarded a score or more honors.<\/p>\n<p>The entire \u201cArgentina\u201d takes places in a Buenos Aires studio and all songs and dances are minimalist, though some feature huge shadowy projections of the entertainers on the back wall many make striking use of light.\u00a0 Blessedly (for a documentary) there is hardly a word of spoken language.\u00a0 Instead, the emphasis is on visual effects, and in that regard the movie looks great.<\/p>\n<p>Saura is intent on showing us a cultural background of our southern friends through music, the universal language.\u00a0 As with Andalusian flamenco, dances and singers work together, all culminating in a climactic dance involving the entire large cast.<\/p>\n<p>Many segments of the film that involve only singers are informative though of just a passing interest, such as one involving the ancestral traditions of the Mapuche Indians of the southwest, a relatively small percentage of the population that consists almost half of Italian extraction.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the dances are particularly sexy, the choreographer urging one couple to hug more closely, while other dances could be compared to the Western style today wherein the partners remain separate, each doing his or her own thing, while grinning at each other from ear to ear.<\/p>\n<p>Entertainers include Louis Salinas, a guitarist singer and composer, who contributes folk songs; the Ballet Nuevo Arte Nativo de Koki &amp; Pajar\u00edn Saavedra, a ballet company with innovative dances; and El Chaque\u00f1o Palavecino, considered by Argentinians to be perhaps the most popular folk singer of the last ten years.\u00a0 Marcela Vilari\u00f1o\u2019s costumes are stunning, particularly one involving men in bright red shirts and black pants, and Fernando Soldevila\u2019s sound production brings out the mellifluousness of Argentinian folk
