{"id":161013,"date":"2016-08-01T21:05:12","date_gmt":"2016-08-02T04:05:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/?p=161013"},"modified":"2016-07-31T09:35:56","modified_gmt":"2016-07-31T16:35:56","slug":"equals-movie-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/2016\/08\/01\/equals-movie-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Equals Movie Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>EQUALS<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>A24\/Scott Free Productions<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Reviewed by: Harvey Karten, Shockya<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Grade: C<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Director:\u00a0 Drake Doremus<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Written by: Nathan Parker, story by Drake Doremus<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Cast: Kristen Stewart, Nicholas Hoult, Guy Pearce, Bel Powley, Jacki Weaver, Scott Lawrence, Toby Huss, Kate Lyn Sheil, David Selby<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Screened at: Dolby 24, NYC, 7\/6\/16<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Opens: July 15, 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some Americans seem so unproductive particularly in high-wage areas that demand 14 hours daily of an individual\u2019s time, that our society should be thinking about how to make people do more in less time.\u00a0 Thanks to the folks who made the movie \u201cEquals\u201d (director Drake Doremus\u2019s 2010 comedy \u201cDouchbag\u201d hardly prepares us for a rigid drama like this new one), such a society exists.\u00a0 Or it will exist at some indeterminate point.\u00a0 In this dystopian sci-fi drama which would doubtless be considered a utopian experiment by its founders and officials, not only is sex forbidden, but from birth, all emotional life is drained from its citizens.\u00a0 So if men are now able to stop thinking about sex every seven minutes, and men and women no longer spend time joking around the water cooler, voil\u00e1: production soars.\u00a0 It also helps that in this (near) futuristic time, all communication is digital, which means that like America in 2016, nobody has to read books, magazines or newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>You can readily see that given the digitalization of this group known as The Collective, people act more mechanically than most of us are today.\u00a0 They walk, they talk, they act not quite like robots: you can still see some humanity.\u00a0 And like in other dystopian utopias, most but not all are happy.\u00a0 Recall for example, in the far superior movie \u201cFahrenheit 451,\u201d only a small group break away from the organization to memorize books rather than give themselves over to see a big brother on the screen, and in \u201cLogan\u2019s Run,\u201d since people are evaporated at age thirty, nobody has time to get old and talk about their operations.<\/p>\n<p>There are flaws: \u201cEquals\u201d is not perfect even in the opinion of its founders and officers because the emotional drain that affects everyone at birth can slowly reverse.\u00a0 People at stage one of this \u201cdisease\u201d start feeling urges, and even before the final stage four when individuals becomes just like us, the governors encourage them to commit suicide.\u00a0 However, not all is lost.\u00a0 A promised cure emerges that allows people infected with emotions like libidinous urges, can get injected and returne to the stage of unemotional workers.<\/p>\n<p>The couple on whom the movie focuses, Silas (Nicholas Hoult) and Nia (the ubiquitous Kristen Stewart), at first talk about their work.\u00a0 He is an artist drawing pictures for the oxymoronic \u201cspeculative nonfiction,\u201d and she dictates for the features. As Silas goes into stage one, his drawings become surreal.\u00a0 He\u2019s mannequin-handsome, which means that soon Nia and he will take breaks, hide out from the government, and embrace, and then some. They are determined to keep their humanity. With the help of rebels like Bess (Jacki Weaver) and Jonas (Guy Pearce in an amazingly small and modulated role), they plan an escape by train to a less sci-fi society.<\/p>\n<p>The trouble with the whole film is that most of it has us staring at people who are rigid\u2014except where rigidity is considered a good thing as in our own world\u2014and that\u2019s hardly able to jog our own emotions.\u00a0 Nor is it much help when the film changes colors according to the emotional levels of its people: blue for futuristic and red for passionate.\u00a0 The motifs are laid out simplistically, overly worked out, including its formulaic trajectory.\u00a0 Still the architecture is amazing.\u00a0 The cast and crew were able to enjoy a free trip to Japan\u2019s Awaji Island, Niigata, Osaka, Shiga and Tokyo and also walk over a bridge in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p>Rated PG-13.\u00a0 101 minutes.\u00a0 \u00a9 Harvey Karten, Member, New York Film Critics
