{"id":162389,"date":"2016-12-11T21:05:07","date_gmt":"2016-12-12T04:05:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/?p=162389"},"modified":"2016-09-09T22:41:20","modified_gmt":"2016-09-10T05:41:20","slug":"neruda-movie-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/2016\/12\/11\/neruda-movie-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Neruda Movie Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ovguide.com\/neruda-9202a8c04000641f800000004d8c3f6f\" title=\"Neruda Videos\" target=\"_blank\">NERUDA<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The Orchard<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Reviewed by: Harvey Karten, Shockya<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Grade: B<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Director:\u00a0 Pablo Larra\u00edn<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Written by: Guillermo Calder\u00f3n<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Cast: Luis Gnecco, Gael Garc\u00eda Bernal, Mercedes Mor\u00e1n, Diego Mu\u00f1oz, Pablo Derqui<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Screened at: Review 2, NYC, 9\/6\/16<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Opens: December 16, 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You wouldn\u2019t think that the working class and the unemployed poor, with all their anxieties and day-to-day hassles, would have the time or inclination to read poetry.\u00a0 That\u2019s probably the case in the U.S. today, where poetry attracts only small numbers of people, but in the 1940s, before TV and the Internet, verses enjoyed greater popularity.\u00a0 Those who like poetry inevitably say that reading it makes them feel more alive, more inspired.\u00a0 This is clearly true during the heyday of Pablo Neruda, Chile\u2019s most famous poet, who is widely translated into English and quite a few other languages.\u00a0 Pablo Larra\u00edn treats the famous man not as a subject for a biopic, but more interestingly uses a part of his life to design something more interesting.<\/p>\n<p>Larra\u00edn is to say the least an imaginative director, whose trilogy \u201cPost Mortem,\u201d \u201cTony Manero,\u201d and \u201cNo\u201d is an anti-fascist triad dealing with the last days of Salvador Allende\u2019s presidency through the far-right terror of General Pinochet 1973-1988.\u00a0 Just last year he contributed the somber \u201cThe Club\u201d about the secluded, punitive existence of disgraced Chilean priests.\u00a0 Chile\u2019s most celebrated director\u2019s \u201cNeruda\u201d is right up his alley given Larra\u00edn\u2019s politics and fertile bent for magic realism.\u00a0 Most of this film is fiction. Larra\u00edn gives us a sometimes surreal view of Neruda not only as a poet but also as an impeached politician, a Chilean senator and communist, whose arrest is ordered by the right-wing government, thereby setting him up as a runaway fugitive.<\/p>\n<p>Most scenes show Neruda with his aristocratic Argentine-born wife Delia del Carril (Mercedes Mor\u00e1n) and in the company of an assortment of communists, some of whom having experienced working-class stresses more than he.\u00a0 A hedonist, who appreciates wine and women but in one scene will not hesitate to hug the one truly down-and-out person in the film, he is being tracked down by a bumbling plainclothesman, Oscar Pelluchoneau (Gael Garc\u00eda Bernal).\u00a0 Peluchonneau may be \u201chalf moron, half idiot\u201d in the words of one observer, but he is more interested in the writings of the title character than, say, your standard New York City traffic officer.\u00a0 As he chases the man\u2014and narrates what he doing more than actually having dialogues with those he encounters\u2014he comes to appreciate that his \u201ccriminal\u201d may be a great writer, but considers that he is guilty of treason by inciting the masses against the government of President Gabriel Gonzalez Videla (Alfredo Casto) in 1948.<\/p>\n<p>In fact he struggles against the idea that he, a mere detective, may be a secondary character, at least when compared to the great Neruda, and imagines himself as a principal of Neruda\u2019s poetry.\u00a0 Among the people he meets who can give him further information about the poet is a drag queen, your basic oppressed male, who explains how the poet gives him a feeling of self-worth denied him by society.<\/p>\n<p>Though parts of Chile are beautiful, attracting skiers and sightseers to an increasingly popular vacation spot, Larra\u00edn\u2019s photographer Sergio Armstrong does his best to ignore the scenic areas, suggesting instead a snow-covered, remote area, one which leads the detective, motorcycle breaking down, to wonder whether he can even survive the day.\u00a0 The mostly contemporary music, particularly of Charles Ives, suggests a noir film with chief plaudits to go to the always reliable Garc\u00eda Bernal and also to the mostly bald, sometimes bearded Neruda played by Luis Gnecco.<\/p>\n<p>The film appeared at the Cannes Festival and is scheduled for the Toronto International Film Festival and for the New York Film Festival, the last known particularly for choosing intellectually demanding films.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unrated.\u00a0 107 minutes.\u00a0 \u00a9
