{"id":162421,"date":"2016-12-18T17:44:09","date_gmt":"2016-12-19T00:44:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/?p=162421"},"modified":"2016-09-09T22:46:40","modified_gmt":"2016-09-10T05:46:40","slug":"julieta-movie-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/2016\/12\/18\/julieta-movie-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Julieta Movie Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ovguide.com\/julieta-9202a8c04000641f800000004d8cd9cc\" title=\"Julieta Movie Clips\" target=\"_blank\">JULIETA<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Sony Pictures Classics<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Reviewed by: Harvey Karten, Shockya<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Grade: A-<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Director:\u00a0 Pedro Almod\u00f3var<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Written by: Pedro Almod\u00f3var, based on Alice Munro\u2019s stories<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Cast: Emma Suarez, Adriana Ugarte, Daniel Grao, Inma Cuesta, Dario Grandinetti<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Screened at: Sony, NYC, 9\/6\/16<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Opens: December 21, 2016<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At one point however brief, you get the impression that Pedro Almod\u00f3var is setting us up to watch a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown.\u00a0 Happily though, at least for people like me not particularly fond of the writer-director\u2019s goofy comedies and lavish worship of women, \u201cJulieta\u201d is one of the Spaniard\u2019s most accessible movies.\u00a0 Maybe that\u2019s because Almod\u00f3var takes as his inspiration three stories by the American novelist Alice Munro, the Canadian writer whose Nobel Prize winning short stories frequently deal with people from Huron County in southwestern Ontario.\u00a0 And her uncomplicated prose will be appreciated by people who are themselves uncomplicated and who have no problem with tales that play around with time.<\/p>\n<p>You might think that \u201cJulieta\u201d is a chick flick, but I suspect that males as well would be riveted by the story, almost brought to tears by the grief suffered by a woman who thinks she is doing the absolute best for her child but who feels justifiably betrayed when the little girl grows up, moves away, and wants nothing more to do with her.<\/p>\n<p>The title character is played magnificently by two actresses, Emma Su\u00e1rez as the older, more mature and more despondent Julieta and by the adorable Adriana Ugarte as the younger woman.\u00a0 Come to think of it, both are adorable.\u00a0 Julieta is so pretty that you can\u2019t imagine anything bad happening to her, certainly not a serious blow from her only child, but tragic things happen and nobody\u2019s ever the same.<\/p>\n<p>The scene opens on the older Julieta (Emma Suarez) who shocks her boyfriend by deciding against the long planned-for trip to Portugal, refusing to give him an explanation.\u00a0 Her s.o. Lorenzo (Dario Grandinetti) had just finished hugging her, confessing that he appreciates Julieta\u2019s company, which would allow him to avoid spending the rest of his life on his own.\u00a0 He leaves for Portugal without her.\u00a0 On a train, she rebuffs an older man\u2019s attempt at conversation, soon feeling guilty because the poor guy commits suicide minutes later on the tracks.\u00a0 (Not her fault, really.)\u00a0 As Julieta writes to her daughter, whom she has not seen in 18 years, the scene flashes back to her affair with a handsome fisherman, Xoan (Daniel Grao) resulting in her pregnancy, and her love and devotion to her new baby.<\/p>\n<p>To further the melodrama, Xoan\u2019s wife has been in a coma for six years and Xoan will fare not much better.\u00a0 An artist and former lover Ava (Inma Cuesta) will develop a serious disease, and Julieta\u2019s mother is in bed with an illness of her own.\u00a0 When tragedy strikes, Julieta, who in her twenties had been a teacher of Classical literature but has no permanent job to support her snazzy apartment, is to suffer one calamity after another.\u00a0 Even her relationship with her father does not come out of Leave It to Beaver.<\/p>\n<p>Scenes of Madrid with its typically European side streets will whet the viewer\u2019s appetite for travel, i.e. if one is willing to take chances now with terrorist groups, and the acting\u2014women in the forefront as is typical with Almod\u00f3var\u2014is mesmerizing.\u00a0 What could have been a classy soap opera instead morphs into a look at the title character with all her healthy enthusiasm and self-destructive mishegas alike.\u00a0 It\u2019s a pleasure to hear the king\u2019s Spanish, that which is spoken in La Mancha, the English titles are clear, and director of photography Jean Claude Larrieu knows how to make love to women with his camera.<\/p>\n<p>The Munro stories which coalesce easily are \u201cSoon\u201d, \u201cSilence,\u201d and
