“Dark Lit Places” EP by Nocturnal Animals<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Coming from the city of Atlanta, indie rock outfit <\/span>Nocturnal Animals<\/b> dropped a four-song EP titled <\/span>Dark Lit Places<\/i><\/b> that feels like a re-invention of style and sound from the Georgia-based four piece. Originally, the band was named \u201c<\/span>Rude!<\/b>,\u201d but now with a name change, the rock band marries elements of alt\/indie rock with some R&B that mostly works at times, but doesn\u2019t feel original or alive.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kicking off the EP with the song \u201c<\/span>Teeth<\/b>,\u201d begins things with a sound clip from Interview with a Vampire, which sets the tone and pace of <\/span>Dark Lit Places<\/i><\/b> nicely. With dark and macabre imagery, <\/span>Nocturnal Animals<\/b> feels like a poppier version of harder sounding \u201chorror rock\u201d bands like <\/span>A.F.I.<\/b> and <\/span>Aiden<\/b>, but without the punch that makes those bands unique. <\/span><\/p>\n

Followed by \u201c<\/span>4am<\/b>,\u201d lead singer <\/span>Mason Jones<\/b> offers high pitch melodies and vocals. <\/span>Jones<\/b> can effectively led the song\u2019s dynamic and catchy hooks, but it\u2019s tough to hear what makes <\/span>Nocturnal Animals<\/b> special. It seems like the band is still trying to find their sound and style, while there is a lot of potential to create something original instead of wearing their influences on their sleeves.<\/span><\/p>\n

The song \u201c<\/span>Red Shoes<\/b>\u201d takes religious imagery and style in a keen, rapid-fire sound that feels like an early <\/span>Panic! at the Disco<\/b> song, but without the style or clever wordplay. The songwriting is pointed and fine, but it just lacks something that will make them stand out from the rest of the flock. <\/span><\/p>\n

The EP ends with the piano ballad \u201cSatellite\u201d that feels like it should come from <\/span>Something Corporate<\/b> or <\/span>Rooney<\/b>, but what makes it from <\/span>Nocturnal Animals<\/b>? It\u2019s the kind of sound you\u2019d hear playing on the third or fourth stage at Warped Tour. Nothing memorable here.<\/span><\/p>\n

While <\/span>Nocturnal Animals<\/b> is proficient at songwriting and performing, there\u2019s a lot of potential, but something is missing. But all in all, <\/span>Dark Lit Places<\/i><\/b> is a very good start, but I\u2019m hoping that the band offers something more lasting and unique on their next release. Most of the elements are there, but it just needs some more experimentation and exploration to bring it out.<\/span><\/p>\n
