Originally, the band was named \u201c<\/span><b>Rude!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d but now with a name change, the rock band marries elements of alt\/indie rock with some R&amp;B that mostly works at times, but doesn\u2019t feel original or alive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kicking off the EP with the song \u201c<\/span><b>Teeth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d begins things with a sound clip from Interview with a Vampire, which sets the tone and pace of <\/span><b><i>Dark Lit Places<\/i><\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nicely. With dark and macabre imagery, <\/span><b>Nocturnal Animals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feels like a poppier version of harder sounding \u201chorror rock\u201d bands like <\/span><b>A.F.I.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Aiden<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but without the punch that makes those bands unique. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Followed by \u201c<\/span><b>4am<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d lead singer <\/span><b>Mason Jones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers high pitch melodies and vocals. <\/span><b>Jones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can effectively led the song\u2019s dynamic and catchy hooks, but it\u2019s tough to hear what makes <\/span><b>Nocturnal Animals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> special. It seems like the band is still trying to find their sound and style, while there is a lot of potential to create something original instead of wearing their influences on their sleeves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The song \u201c<\/span><b>Red Shoes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d takes religious imagery and style in a keen, rapid-fire sound that feels like an early <\/span><b>Panic! at the Disco<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> song, but without the style or clever wordplay. The songwriting is pointed and fine, but it just lacks something that will make them stand out from the rest of the flock. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EP ends with the piano ballad \u201cSatellite\u201d that feels like it should come from <\/span><b>Something Corporate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>Rooney<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but what makes it from <\/span><b>Nocturnal Animals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? It\u2019s the kind of sound you\u2019d hear playing on the third or fourth stage at Warped Tour. Nothing memorable here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><b>Nocturnal Animals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is proficient at songwriting and performing, there\u2019s a lot of potential, but something is missing. But all in all, <\/span><b><i>Dark Lit Places<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a very good start, but I\u2019m hoping that the band offers something more lasting and unique on their next release.
