“Campfire Party” by Justin Shapiro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Hailing from Washington D.C., <\/span>Justin Shapiro<\/b> has made a name for himself in the local cover band scene. He performed with the likes of bands that cover songs from <\/span>Neil Young<\/b>, <\/span>Bob Dylan<\/b>, and <\/span>Paul Simon<\/b>. While Shapiro also started a band of his own called <\/span>Green River Junction<\/b> with drummer <\/span>Rich Cairns<\/b> and bassist <\/span>Derek Wiggins<\/b>, the trio ultimately fizzled out when members moved away from the nation\u2019s capital. However, <\/span>Justin Shapiro<\/b> is making his own mark with his solo debut \u201c<\/span>Campfire Party<\/b>,\u201d but sadly, it\u2019s a real stinker!<\/span><\/p>\n

Starting off with the album\u2019s opener \u201c<\/span>Lost In Time<\/b>,\u201d <\/span>Shapiro<\/b> displays no sense of witty lyrics or original themes. It just seems very well-worn and trite. It\u2019s not the subject matter — there are plenty of love songs out there about men loving women — but it\u2019s just the way that it\u2019s delivered, which is so cheesy and cornball that <\/span>Mr. Shapiro<\/b> has the makings of a good afternoon snack instead of a hit song here. It\u2019s just bad, but I like the slappy bass though.<\/span><\/p>\n

The rest of the album is full of uninspired trash that only belongs in open mics in drab midwestern taverns. I mean, it sounds like a jam band from old dad\u2019s who don\u2019t seem to know that only <\/span>Dave Matthews<\/b> can pull off music from the <\/span>Dave Matthews Band<\/b>. Everyone else who tries should just relegate their music to dark corners of small town bars. <\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s repetitive, shrill, eye-roll worthy, and completely disposable. Off-key and reaching, I mean, c\u2019mon, \u201c<\/span>Mr. Bluebird<\/b>?\u201d What are we trying to do here? A song about how inspirational birds are? Bluebirds are a metaphor for freedom? This is tacky postcard material. You throw a stamp on it and send it to a friend, but ultimately it has no meaning. It\u2019s just nice and inoffensive. And if you ask me, that\u2019s the worst thing you can be if you\u2019re trying to create something, especially music.<\/span><\/p>\n

I can go on, but I don\u2019t want to waste your time like listening to this album did for me. I will say, I actually like the song \u201c<\/span>Stand<\/b>,\u201d it has a nice feeling and groove. It suits <\/span>Shapiro\u2019s<\/b> voice and it does display an honesty that the rest of the album lacks. And I also liked the hook for \u201c<\/span>Campfire Party<\/b>,\u201d but lyrically it\u2019s too simple and mundane to even be considered. It\u2019s like a high school band, in terms of songwriting, performance, outlook, and execution. Overall, it\u2019s just weak sauce. Nice try, <\/span>Mr. Shapiro<\/b>, but don\u2019t quit your day job.<\/span><\/p>\n
