It was written when he was on vacation with his family in the Bavarian Alps. And since he was backpacking, <\/span><b>Thompson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> couldn\u2019t bring a guitar on his trip for songwriting, so he did the next best thing&#8230; he wrote the album on a ukulele. A pink ukulele that he bought for his daughter for only \u20ac9 (what a steal). The end result is a transformative piece of work that invites listeners to create their own \u201cromantic stories.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The album\u2019s opening track \u201c<\/span><b>A Thud<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d is everything but. It\u2019s a clean recording that evokes a certain style and tone that\u2019s consistent throughout <\/span><b><i>Romantic Stories<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s followed by \u201c<\/span><b>Devil&#8217;s Bridge<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d which is a good piece of storytelling and vivid imagery. \u201c<\/span><b>Face of God We Climb<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d has a wonderful sense of driving melodies and clever wordplay, while \u201c<\/span><b>In The Monk&#8217;s Garden<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d is catchy and sharp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Romantic Stories<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> moves into something that feels more considered with the song \u201c<\/span><b>Anymore<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d and also well-textured and well-layered with \u201c<\/span><b>W\u00fcnderweg<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d Although the album hit high heights with strong songwriting, it also hits a speed bump and takes a turn to uncertainty with \u201c<\/span><b>Maxh\u00fctte Trail<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d which doesn\u2019t feel like it fits with the rest of the songs of the album. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, <\/span><b>Thompson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> re-gains that special feeling he created at the beginning with the song \u201c<\/span><b>White Piano<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d which feels very confident and true. The title track also saves the missteps of the album, as it\u2019s finished off with \u201c<\/span><b>Lamplight Over Prague<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d which is a lovely ballad of longing and shyness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Marty Thompson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feels like an expert with <\/span><b><i>Romantic Stories<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and it\u2019s a very strong effort from the singer\/songwriter. It\u2019s striking and complex, as it conveys so much emotion in clever storytelling.
