“Paper Planes Vol. 1” by Kicklighter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Singer\/songwriter\/multiple instrumentalist <\/span>Everett Young<\/b> has taken a journey from creating pop music to scoring film and TV. But before he takes the next step to full on orchestral music and arrangements, <\/span>Young<\/b> released a collection of songs under the moniker <\/span>Kicklighter<\/b> to get the, as he calls it, “intellectual pop” music out of his system first. However, his debut album <\/span>Paper Planes Vol. 1<\/i><\/b> has so much energy and life that it\u2019s sad to think that he might deprive audiences from more of this unique pop sound.<\/span><\/p>\n

The opening track shows off <\/span>Young\u2019s<\/b> talent for bringing a listener into his space and sound. \u201c<\/span>Too Much Too Soon<\/b>\u201d has a great percussive beat behind it with a clean production and feels like a good build to it. It\u2019s a soulful and honest song, while \u201c<\/span>Howard Jones<\/b>\u201d has a wonderful pop sound that\u2019s tuneful and expressive, and seems to be about the British singer\/songwriter known for songs like \u201c<\/span>Things Can Only Get Better<\/b><\/a>\u201d and \u201c<\/span>What Is Love<\/b><\/a>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The song \u201c<\/span>A Week of Rain<\/b>\u201d is an upbeat pop song with vivid imagery and storytelling that reminds me of the best of <\/span>Peter Gabriel<\/b> meets <\/span>Nick Hornby<\/b>, while \u201c<\/span>Bittersweet<\/b>\u201d keeps it mellow as a slow jam with its soft and smooth as buttery goodness with clever wordplay and lyrics. \u201c<\/span>Four Leaf Clover<\/b>\u201d feels like an imaginative pop arrangement with full-on horns and bright vocals from the first listen to the last. Each song continues to impress, while never falling into sappy or corny.<\/span><\/p>\n

The track \u201c<\/span>Dark Side of the Moon<\/b>\u201d is a touching and thoughtful ballad that\u2019s full of big emotions and well-considered feelings, as the song \u201c<\/span>Do it Again<\/b>\u201d is a bouncy and fun crowd-pleaser that has great vocals and a driving sound. Wonderful and mature songwriting that\u2019s seems unpretentious and deceptively complex. It\u2019s followed by \u201c<\/span>A Friend of Mine<\/b>,\u201d which is a pleasant and smile-inducing pop sound that\u2019s reminiscent of <\/span>Tahiti 80<\/b> and <\/span>Cibo Matto<\/b> by way of <\/span>Prefab Sprout<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>It’s On the Tip of My Tongue<\/b>\u201d is a nice meditation on regret and longing that suits the overall themes of <\/span>Paper Planes Vol. 1<\/i><\/b> with electrifying guitar work and poignant points and lyrics, while \u201c<\/span>They Don’t Write That Kind of Song Anymore<\/b>\u201d seems to be a knowing and biting comment at <\/span>Young\u2019s<\/b> own songwriting, while also a look at himself as an artist. At the same time, it feels like a pop version of songs from <\/span>Badly Drawn Boy<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The album ends with \u201c<\/span>It’s Over<\/b>,\u201d which features a strong funky groove that sounds like it could be from <\/span>Jamiroquai<\/b>, or maybe if it were beefed up with a hip-hop break, it could be from <\/span>Pharrell Williams<\/b>. It\u2019s a dancey way to end an album, as it sends the listener on their way with a smile on their face and a groove in their heart. <\/span><\/p>\n

Although the end of the album isn\u2019t as strong as the beginning (but \u201c<\/span>It\u2019s Over<\/b>\u201d is a genuine blow-the-roof-off track), <\/span>Kicklighter<\/b> delivers a very strong effort that\u2019s worthy of your attention. He makes the best possible pop sounds for the middle aged, while for <\/span>Everett Young<\/b>, the late 80s didn\u2019t end in 1990, but rather it continues on in 2018. Now I\u2019m really looking forward to what <\/span>Paper Planes Vol. 2<\/i><\/b> has in store for us!<\/span><\/p>\n
