“Darkness and Light” by Crooked Flower<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Assembling in Berkeley, California in 2014, <\/span>Crooked Flower<\/b> has proven to be a worthwhile independent recording artist with three albums under their belt and a new one on its way. The band\u2019s new EP <\/span>Darkness and Light<\/i><\/b> is a way to release more music between studio albums. <\/span>CF<\/b> mix elements of rock, funk, and psychedelic with strong R&B vocals that\u2019s very pleasing to the ear.<\/span><\/p>\n

Coming in at a whopping 11 minutes and 50 seconds, \u201c<\/span>Bells of Brixton<\/b>\u201d is one helluva way to kick off an EP, which are generally about the same running time for 4 or 5 songs in total. <\/span>Crooked Flower<\/b> shows their ambitions by trying to get your attention as a listener with a big and operatic opening that\u2019s simply too big to ignore. The track is robust with a clear inspiration to <\/span>Jeff Buckley<\/b> and <\/span>The Cure<\/b> with a healthy dose of <\/span>311<\/b> and <\/span>Grateful Dead<\/b>, as a jam band with elements of funk in a well-structured arrangement of music with layers on top of layers.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s tough to follow up a track like \u201c<\/span>Bells of Brixton<\/b>,\u201d but \u201c<\/span>Tunnel of Light<\/b>\u201d adds something the opener didn\u2019t have, vocals. The song features <\/span>Angelina Dang<\/b>, who has a soulful voice that\u2019s perfectly suitable for <\/span>Crooked Flower<\/b>. It has a wonderful driving and kick with smart arrangements and clean production value. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Moving On<\/b>\u201d is spellbinding with sharp guitar work from <\/span>Dan Ingberman<\/b>, who compliments <\/span>Dang\u2019s<\/b> smooth as silk vocal stylings, while the release is finished off with \u201c<\/span>Boyfriend<\/b>,\u201d a mellow track that has hints of math rock structures with soft and bubbly tones as it builds to a fitting way to end <\/span>Darkness and Light<\/i><\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Overall, the EP is a strong release with electric elements that seem perfect for each other. You remove one of them and it appears to all fall apart, so it\u2019s a good thing the members of <\/span>Crooked Flower<\/b> work so well together.<\/span><\/p>\n
