“In Your Room” by Sebastian O<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Italian singer-songwriter <\/span>Sebastian O<\/b> combines elements of theatre and art in his music, which he writes with a unique methodology. <\/span>Mr. O<\/b> focuses and emphasis layering in his songwriting that leads to results that are… interesting, to say the least. While there\u2019s no doubt he\u2019s soulful with raw emotions and talent, his new album \u201c<\/span>In Your Room<\/b>\u201d just left me wanting something deeper in its style and presentation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe core of my method derives from the consciousness of the transitory essence of the self, which is nothing but a collection of living moments which shapes different subjectivities in time,\u201d <\/span>Sebastian O<\/b> said in a statement. \u201cMy desire to express the true present self brought me to completely remove any post-editing of lyrics and music from my composing process. Such edits would come not as a stream of consciousness but as a second thought over the composition, which would distort the original expression of the self.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The album opens with the song \u201c<\/span>Blue and Gold<\/b>,\u201d which has a soft tinge of grace with sweet melodies and soulful swag that feels like a combination of <\/span>Nick Drake<\/b> and <\/span>Damien Rice<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The song \u201c<\/span>Following your eyes<\/b>\u201d has some wonder guitar work from <\/span>Sebastian O<\/b> with keen storytelling with a robust sound and clean production, while \u201c<\/span>Cheers<\/b>\u201d feels very much influenced by <\/span>Jeff Buckley<\/b> with its slow build and graceful sound that teeters on pure Rock and Roll and classic singer\/songwriter fare.<\/span><\/p>\n

The song \u201c<\/span>Colors<\/b>\u201d has an upbeat tone that feels playful and down-to-Earth with a hint of <\/span>Keaton Henson<\/b> and <\/span>Nick Drake<\/b> throughout, while \u201c<\/span>Floating<\/b>\u201d opens with a hollow guitar that\u2019s quickly filled with <\/span>Sebastian O\u2019s<\/b> gentle, yet strong, voice. The track \u201cI live in a wardrobe\u201d has a wonderful waltz quality to it with a fresh sound that feels like <\/span>Damien Rice<\/b> meets <\/span>Conor Oberst<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Irish Rain<\/b>\u201d has a slow tone to it, which I don\u2019t mean in a bad way. It simply fills the space with a heavy and somber mood that feels jazzy, yet folk, while \u201c<\/span>I won’t move<\/b>\u201d has a good guitar \u201cnoodling\u201d tone that fills a listener\u2019s mind with deep emotions and raw feelings.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I wanna be sedated<\/b>\u201d is an interesting cover of <\/span>The Ramones\u2019<\/b> classic of the same name, as it feels perfectly playful and unique. Of course, I prefer the irreverence of the original, but I applaud <\/span>Sebastian O\u2019s<\/b> attempt. \u201c<\/span>Take a look at this heart<\/b>\u201d has an wakeful glide to it with hearty and soulful meaning, while the album ends with the song \u201c<\/span>Jacqueline<\/b>,\u201d which sounds as sweet as hopefully the person who inspired it is. <\/span><\/p>\n

Overall, while I did enjoy most of \u201c<\/span>In Your Room<\/b>,\u201d I can\u2019t help but feel I\u2019m listening to parts of other singer\/songwriters like <\/span>Jeff Buckley<\/b>, <\/span>Nick Drake<\/b>, <\/span>Damien Rice<\/b>, <\/span>Keaton Henson<\/b>, <\/span>Conor Oberst<\/b>, and even <\/span>Fiona Apple<\/b>. I just can\u2019t tell what parts represent <\/span>Sebastian O<\/b>. It\u2019s technically savvy, but doesn\u2019t feel distinct or personal, even though the lyrics give off that feeling. I just feel slightly disappointed because <\/span>Sebastian O<\/b> is obviously talented, just not completely original. <\/span><\/p>\n
