Legends and literature introduce us to some brave and exceptional women that went beyond the call of duty to save their countries and people.<\/p>\n

We heard of Yael, in the Hebrew Bible Book of Judges, who killed Sisera, King Hazor\u2019s military commander, to deliver the Israelites from the people of Canaan in the twelve century BC; We also heard of Jeanne d\u2019Arc, a French peasant woman, The Maid of Orleans<\/em>, who went to battle for France\u2019s recovery from English domination during the Hundred Years\u2019 War<\/em> in 1430; and let us not forget Chanah Senesh, a paratrooper, who parachuted with the British Army into Yugoslavia in 1944 to assist in the rescue of Hungarian Jews about to be deported to Auschwitz.<\/p>\n

Now we meet Halla (Halld\u00f3ra Geirhar\u00f0sd\u00f3ttir), a passionate environmental activist, a Mountain Woman<\/em> who declares war on the local aluminum industry to prevent it from disfiguring the Icelandic highlands. She damages pylons and wires and cuts their power supply, causing chaos and lots of media coverage in Iceland. Halla is also a future adoptive parent for four-year old Ukrainian Nika (Margaryta Hilska), and is faced with a dilemma of whether to continue her illegal civic activities or dedicate her energy to future parenting.<\/p>\n

Director Benedikt Erlingsson\u2019s Woman at War<\/em> is a drama, an eco-thriller and a comedy all wrapped in one delightful humorous package that does not overstay its welcome during a one-hundred-and-one-minute run.<\/p>\n

Halld\u00f3ra Geirhar\u00f0sd\u00f3ttir plays fifty-year old choir conductor Halla, and her identical twin sister \u00c1sa. She is in top physical shape, while hiking the Icelandic mountains, with a bow and an arrow, swimming in the rivers, and hiding in nooks and caves among a flock of sheep. As \u00c1sa she portrays a calm person who dedicates her life to Yoga and tranquility.<\/p>\n

J\u00f3n J\u00f3hannsson appears in a supporting role of \u201cCousin\u201d Sveinbojorn, always accompanied by a black and white sheep dog named Woman<\/em>, who executes his verbal commands of: \u201cWoman Come!\u201d<\/em>, \u201cWoman Sit!<\/em>\u201d and \u201cWoman Bark!\u201d<\/em>. Two under-developed supporting roles are presented by J\u00f6rundur Ragnarsson as Baldvin, an environmental activist; and Margaryta Hilska as Nika, Halla\u2019s adopted daughter.<\/p>\n

Music plays an important part in Woman at War<\/em> and includes two groups. A pianist, accordionist, drummer and a saxophonist are played respectively by Dav\u00ed\u00f0 \u00de\u00f3r J\u00f3nsson, Magn\u00fas Trygvason Eliasen and \u00d3mar Gu\u00f0j\u00f3nsson. A second group includes a mini Greek chorus, addressing Halla and the audience, while singing Ukrainian country songs, performed by Iryna Danyleiko, Galyna Goncharenko and Susanna Karpenko.<\/p>\n

The film was shot beautifully by Bergsteinn Bj\u00f6rg\u00falfsson in sparsely populated parts of Iceland, with a red-roofed farm house \u201cin-the-middle-of-nowhere\u201d, and in a flooded orphanage in Ukraine. English, Icelandic, Spanish and Ukrainian are spoken with English subtitles.<\/p>\n
