Cannabis compounds may be the next beneficial medical treatment in the fight against COVID-19. The compounds have been discovered to prevent the virus that causes COVID from penetrating healthy human cells, according to a lab study<\/a> published in the Journal of Nature Products. <\/p>\n

During a chemical screening, the two compounds commonly found in hemp – annabigerolic acid, or CBGA, and cannabidiolic acid, or CBDA \u2014 were identified as having the potential to combat coronavirus, researchers from Oregon State University said. In the study, the compounds were found to block a step the pathogen uses to infect people.<\/p>\n

The researchers tested the compounds’ effect against alpha and beta variants of the virus in a lab. The study didn’t involve giving the supplements to people or comparing infection rates in those who use the compounds to those who don’t.<\/p>\n

“These compounds can be taken orally and have a long history of safe use in humans,” said Richard van Breemen, a researcher with Oregon State’s Global Hemp Innovation Center. “They have the potential to prevent as well as treat infection by SARS-CoV-2.”<\/p>\n

CBD, in particular, acts as a therapeutic treatment by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which regulates cardiovascular, nervous and immune system functions. CBD also binds to and activates receptors in the brain that create a therapeutic effect in the body, which helps users find relief from painful symptoms of COVID, without feeling impaired. CBD is also a known antimicrobial and antioxidant.<\/p>\n
