The Oscars weren\u2019t just an awards show, they were a national event, a shared experience that pulled tens of millions of eyes at once.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\nThose days are gone.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">When the Oscars Owned the Culture<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\nIn 1998, the Academy Awards drew more than <strong>57 million television viewers<\/strong>. That wasn\u2019t niche success. That was cultural dominance. The number of people watching on traditional broadcast television is significantly lower.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\nThat\u2019s not a dip.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\nThat\u2019s a collapse.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This Isn\u2019t Adaptation. It\u2019s Admission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\nTelevision no longer controls attention, culture, or relevance. The shared experience it once monopolized has splintered into millions of feeds, clips, reaction videos, and algorithmic timelines.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\nAwards shows didn\u2019t lose relevance because of bad hosts or weak nominees. They lost relevance because the medium that once amplified them lost its grip.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Numbers That Killed Broadcast TV<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\nBy 2025, streaming accounts for roughly <strong>45% of all U.S. viewing time<\/strong>, surpassing broadcast and cable combined.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\nBroadcast television now represents <strong>around 20%<\/strong> of total viewing and continues to shrink every quarter. Cable is collapsing even faster.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\nLive television viewership in key demographics has fallen between <strong>18% and 30%<\/strong> year over year across major networks.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\nMore than <strong>a quarter of Americans no longer watch live television at all<\/strong>. Culture is now consumed through clips, feeds, social platforms, or not at all.\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Why Award Shows Don\u2019t Matter Anymore<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\nTelevision\u2019s power was always communal. Millions watching together. One moment.
