Michael Vaituulala<\/em> <em>and his wife Savannah Vaituulala.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WAILUKU, Hawaii<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 The<strong> Maui Police Commission <\/strong>voted 6-0 on Wednesday to place <strong>Police Chief John Pelletier<\/strong> on paid administrative leave and open an <strong>independent investigation<\/strong> into his oversight of the department&#8217;s<strong> Criminal Intelligence Unit<\/strong>, the unit whose <strong>commander was arrested by the FBI<\/strong> in August on charges he <strong>sold police protection to cockfighters, drug traffickers and fireworks smugglers<\/strong>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.civilbeat.org\/2026\/10\/maui-police-chief-put-on-paid-leave-amid-corruption-probe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Honolulu Civil Beat reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Independent reporter <strong>Connect the Dots with Jenni <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1hJY1qJnFlE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">stated<\/a> that she had confirmation that <strong>multiple officers have received target letters from the FBI.<\/strong> One of them being <strong>Michael Vaituulala&#8217;s wife&#8217;s cousin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pelletier was flying home from <strong>New Jersey<\/strong>, where the <strong>FBI <\/strong>had him on stage as a presenter at its conference, Deputy Chief Wade Maeda told the commission.<strong> The same FBI that two months earlier walked his intelligence commander out in handcuffs apparently saw no problem handing the chief a microphone.<\/strong> In a second unanimous vote, the commissioners made Maeda acting chief. His own department had suspended him in March over an illegal fireworks incident, five months before the <strong>FBI <\/strong>moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pelletier&#8217;s response in August was a press conference. <\/strong>He said he was &#8220;disappointed, shocked, upset,&#8221; promised &#8220;zero tolerance,&#8221; announced an internal investigation and an outside review by <strong>Hawaii County Police Chief Reed Mahuna<\/strong>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.staradvertiser.com\/2026\/08\/11\/hawaii-news\/maui-police-disband-unit-led-by-officer-accused-of-corruption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disbanded the unit<\/a>.<strong> None of that answers the question the commission has now been forced to ask. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A lieutenant does not run a protection racket for &#8220;many years,&#8221; in the words of the complaint, inside a unit with a direct line to the chief&#8217;s office without the chief either knowing or not wanting to know.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pelletier: Dirty, Stupid, or Both?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of this should surprise anyone who has been staying on top of the news. In <strong>November 2024<\/strong>, we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/2024\/11\/18\/mob-connected-maui-police-chief-john-pelletier-in-free-fall-oprah-winfrey-and-diddy-connections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>\u00a0that <strong>three senior commanders had been forced out of the department<\/strong>, that <strong>eight complaints had been filed against the chief within eight months<\/strong>, and that a <strong>2021 Board of Ethics complaint had alleged collusion between Pelletier and commission members in his own selection. <\/strong>Sources described a <strong>&#8220;reign of terror&#8221; inside the department<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <strong>May 2025<\/strong>, we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/2025\/05\/09\/sean-diddy-combs-corrupt-police-chief-john-pelletier-in-alleged-car-accident-coverup-was-driving-intoxicated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported allegations<\/a>\u00a0that <strong>Pelletier was &#8220;driving intoxicated&#8221;<\/strong> in a <strong>single-car crash near his home in Wailuku<\/strong>. The incident had been handled by fellow officers in a way that spared him a breathalyzer. <strong>Pelletier has never addressed those claims.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@ConnectTheDotswithJeni\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jeni\u2019s<\/a> sources, <strong>Pelletier<\/strong> was allegedly <strong>drinking<\/strong> <strong>with fellow officers<\/strong>, and <strong>drove into a ditch while intoxicated<\/strong>. A <strong>patrol officer<\/strong> then showed up to administer a <strong>breathalyzer test<\/strong>, and was <strong>yelled at by other officers<\/strong> to <strong>not<\/strong> <strong>administer<\/strong> <strong>it<\/strong>. A tow truck then came to pull out the vehicle out of the ditch.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Pelletier<\/strong> was allegedly <strong>drinking<\/strong> <strong>with fellow officers<\/strong>, and <strong>drove into a ditch while intoxicated<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between those two stories came the lawsuit. On <strong>March 7, 2025<\/strong>, <strong>Ashley Parham<\/strong> amended her federal complaint against <strong>Sean &#8220;Diddy&#8221; Combs<\/strong> in the <strong>Northern District of California to name Pelletier<\/strong>, alleging that he <strong>participated in multiple crimes <\/strong>with Combs, when he was a <strong>Las Vegas Metro Police captain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two other plaintiffs alleged <strong>Pelletier kidnapped them<\/strong> <strong>from Las Vegas at gunpoint<\/strong>. Pelletier called the allegations &#8220;false&#8221; and &#8220;baseless.&#8221; Several sources report that federal investigations are ongoing against Pelletier in that matter, including his alleged participation in recent tampering with witnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around the same time, <strong>Pelletier was seen at a Maui Police Commission meeting in the company of Shep Gordon and Adam Venit. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/business\/business-news\/former-wme-agent-adam-venit-sued-for-assault-domestic-violence-by-ex-wife-1235172401\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Venit<\/a>, the former head of WME\u2019s motion picture department, was<strong> publicly accused by actor Terry Crews of groping him at a 2016 party<\/strong>, and was <strong>sued in 2022 by his estranged wife<\/strong>, who alleged <strong>he strangled, punched and kicked her. <\/strong>He has denied both. <strong>Gordon<\/strong>, the longtime manager of <strong>Alice Cooper and of Johnny Depp\u2019s band the Hollywood Vampires<\/strong>, is a Maui resident with <strong>deep Hollywood connections<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A police chief under fire does not usually bring a <strong>disgraced Hollywood agent and a celebrity manager <\/strong>to his own oversight hearing. That he did invites the obvious question, which is whether the <strong>Las Vegas captain <\/strong>who swears he never worked for <strong>Sean Combs <\/strong>has been working with Hollywood executives all along. It lends weight to the claim at the center of the <strong>Parham suit:<\/strong> <strong>that Pelletier was never just a cop, but a fixer who worked for Sean Combs and others.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure coincidence<\/strong>, and there have been a <strong>lot of coincidences<\/strong>. He falsely represented himself as the Las Vegas incident commander at the<strong> Route 91 shooting in 2017<\/strong>. He was the chief in <strong>Lahaina <\/strong>on <strong>Aug. 8, 2023<\/strong>, when <strong>102 people died <\/strong>and survivors described <strong>police barricades turning cars back toward the fire<\/strong>, a charge he disputes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>He is the officer named in a Diddy rape suit. <\/strong>Writer <strong>Jessica Reed Kraus <\/strong>put it this way\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jessicareedkraus.substack.com\/p\/the-strange-case-of-john-pelletier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">last year<\/a>: <strong>&#8220;Some men seem to be magnets for catastrophe. John Pelletier is one of them.&#8221;<\/strong> The corruption of a unit that reported to him does not need a theory. It needs an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Maui Police Commission&#8217;s Role in the Corruption<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The commission has sole authority to hire and fire the chief. For 19 months it used that authority to protect him. <\/strong>It has not said who will conduct the investigation, what it will cover beyond &#8220;oversight&#8221; of the unit, or when it will report. <strong>Vaituulala&#8217;s case<\/strong> has not yet produced an indictment on the public docket, and his lawyer is fighting to see the sealed material prosecutors used to keep him locked up. Whatever is in that material is what the commission needs to see too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pelletier <\/strong>was hired from<strong> Las Vegas in 2021 <\/strong>in a contested selection that passed over local candidates with more experience. A <strong>Board of Ethics complaint <\/strong>accused the commission that hired him of <strong>colluding with him in the process<\/strong>, and commissioners were questioned over <strong>multiple trips to Las Vegas <\/strong>while the search was underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Five years later the department&#8217;s intelligence unit is gone, its commander is in a federal cell, and the chief is on paid leave with the FBI conference lanyard still around his neck.<\/strong> Maeda says the FBI has never suggested the chief did anything wrong. The commission has decided it would rather find out than take his word for it.
