Showtime has canceled the comedy-drama series ‘United States of Tara’ after three seasons, but has renewed fellow dark comedy ‘Nurse Jackie’ for a fourth season, TVLine<\/a> is reporting. ‘United States of Tara,’ which was created by ‘Juno’ writer Diablo Cody and Steven Spielberg, starred Toni Collette in the title role, a mother with multiple personalities. The actress won the 2009 Emmy Award and 2011 Golden Globe for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.<\/p>\n

After the news of ‘United States of Tara’s cancellation, Cody tweeted “TARA got canned, everyone. I feel sick, but proud…Thank YOU for watching!” The show, which will air its final episode on June 20, 2011, averages 326,000 per new episode this season, while last season averaged 560,000 viewers.<\/p>\n

‘Nurse Jackie,’ in which Edie Falco stars as the title character, a nurse battling drug addiction at New York City’s All Saints’ Hospital, averages 762,000 viewers weekly. Falco won the 2010 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the show.<\/p>\n
