“Green Lantern” premiered last week to the type of fanfare designated for any big-budget comic book superhero film. The film is the box-office winner, grossing $53.2 million over its opening weekend, but was a critical failure. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film only garnered a critical rating of 26%, making the film undeniably “rotten” by the site’s standards. However, the audience liked it and gave it a 61%. <\/p>\n

The consensus at the site was that the film was “[n]oisy, overproduced, and thinly written” and that the film “squanders an impressive budget and decades of comics mythology.”<\/p>\n

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds).
