{"id":8612,"date":"2008-10-30T00:53:56","date_gmt":"2008-10-30T07:53:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.toxicshock.tv\/news\/2008\/10\/30\/mike-nichols-to-remake-kurosawa-high-and-low\/"},"modified":"2008-10-29T16:35:09","modified_gmt":"2008-10-29T23:35:09","slug":"mike-nichols-to-remake-kurosawa-high-and-low","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shockya.com\/news\/2008\/10\/30\/mike-nichols-to-remake-kurosawa-high-and-low\/","title":{"rendered":"Mike Nichols to Remake Kurosawa High and Low"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mike Nichols, who directed last year&#8217;s <strong>Charlie Wilson&#8217;s War<\/strong>, is confirmed to direct a remake of Akira Kurosawa&#8217;s <strong>High and Low<\/strong> for Miramax Films.<\/p>\n<p>Kurosawa&#8217;s original 1963 film starred Toshiro Mifune as a businessman who learns his son has been kidnapped and pays ransom to the criminals, only to find out it is actually his chauffeur&#8217;s son, sending him into dilemma of whether or not the child&#8217;s life is worth his money. The film itself was based on the novel <em>King&#8217;s Ransom<\/em> by Ed McBain.<\/p>\n<p>The reboot&#8217;s screenplay has been written by David Mamet (<strong>Hannibal<\/strong>, <strong>Ronin<\/strong>) and has not started casting yet. Scott Rudin and Martin Scorsese are set to produce the film.<\/p>\n<p>Originally, Scorsese was supposed to direct a remake of the film, but since it took Mamet over two years to acquire rights to the screenplay, Scorsese put it on hold.<\/p>\n<p>So far, two of Kurosawa&#8217;s films have been remade. <strong>The Seven Samurai<\/strong> was made into a U.S. Western film in 1960, <strong>The Magnificent Seven<\/strong>, and is equally as popular as its original. <strong>Rashomon<\/strong> was remade into <strong>The Outrage<\/strong> in 1964 and starred the late Paul Newman. <\/p>\n<p>Steven Spielberg is also currently developing a remake of <strong>Ikiru<\/strong> for DreamWorks.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image8615\" src=\"http:\/\/www.toxicshock.tv\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/high_and_low_kurosawa.jpg\" alt=\"High and Low Kurosawa Still\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mike Nichols, who directed last year&#8217;s Charlie Wilson&#8217;s War, is confirmed to direct a remake of Akira Kurosawa&#8217;s High and Low for Miramax Films.
