With just one new wide release, things are rather tame this weekend, and that could lead to an even bigger opening for The Hunger Games<\/I> next weekend. But for now, we’re just looking at 21 Jump Street<\/I>. Comedies tend to have a tough time this time of year. In fact, Paul<\/I> was the only wide release comedy to hit last March and it only took $13 million its first weekend out. Then again, that one had some competition. With nothing but the box office veterans in its way, 21 Jump Street<\/I> could accumulate as much as Cop Out<\/I>, about $18 million.<\/p>\n

As for those veterans, Dr. Seuss\u2019 The Lorax<\/I> will undoubtedly lead the pack again and quite possibly trump 21 Jump Street<\/I> too, falling about 35% and taking in another $25 million. As for John Carter<\/I>, it could see a Battle: Los Angeles<\/I>-sized week two drop and lose 55% of its opening earnings, leaving it with just $14 million. Thanks to 21 Jump Street<\/I> moving into the crude humor zone, Project X<\/I> could be in for another 47% drop, giving it $6 million for weekend three. Act of Valor<\/I>, on the other hand, might see a lesser blow, falling just 40% and posting a $4 million week four haul.<\/p>\n

Thanks to the typical weekend two 50% drop most horror films endure, A Thousand Words<\/I> might hold on to the sixth position. Should it lose 40% of its opening earnings, it\u2019ll post about $3.5 million while Silent House<\/I> will take just over $3 million. Safe House<\/I> looks to continues its impressively modest decline, perhaps only dropping 40% and remaining in the top ten even after six weeks with another $2.5 million. <\/p>\n

After a $2 million weekend at 369 theaters, Friends with Kids<\/I> might have a chance at cracking the top ten thanks to its 271 theater boost. Should it post a $3,000 per theater average, it\u2019ll take another $2 million and the ninth spot. The last position will be a battle between romance movies, The Vow<\/I> and This Means War<\/I>. Last weekend, the former topped the latter, but the latter had the lesser percent change. With The Vow<\/I> losing 303 theaters this weekend and This Means War<\/I> only 289, my money is on This Means War<\/I> to hold slightly stronger.<\/p>\n
