Talking to MTV, “The Day The Earth Stood Still” star Keanu Reeves’ love of the hit anime series “Cowboy Bebop” and his desire to work on an adaptation of the project has come to light.<\/p>\n
When asked about it recently Reeves said “We’re trying to do that. […] It’s got a Western quality, a Western film noir aspect to it,” Reeves, on why exactly he loves the franchise, says “It’s got so much style to it, and that’s part of its appeal. That kind of Old West, bordertown, low-tech science fiction aspect.”<\/p>\n
The project is currently being put together by producer Erwin Stoff, who’s spent the last two decades working almost exclusively on Keanu Reeves projects, and recently set the film up at 20th Century Fox. “We’ve got the rights, we’ve got a writer,” Reeves says, and that “[Stoff]’s putting together a scene outline.”<\/p>\n
“Cowboy Bebop” is directed by the reknowned Shinichir? Watanabe and written by Keiko Nobumoto. Consisting of 26 episodes that originally ran in Japan between 1998 and 1999, the series follows the adventures of a group of bounty hunters, or “cowboys” traveling on their spaceship the Bebop through the galaxy in the year 2071 hunting bounties and getting into various misadventures. It has since become a worldwide phenomenon, particularly in the US thanks to several runs on the late-night cartoon block “[adult swim]” on the Cartoon Network. <\/p>\n
The series, not counting the 2001 feature film that takes place between episodes 22 and 23, is known for its non-linear storytelling episodes that each act as stand-alone adventures, as well as its jazz and early 50’s rock \u2018n roll soundtrack and setting space battles and martial arts fights to the music. <\/p>\n
