Megamind tops all three home video charts

Posted by monique On March - 3 - 2011 0 Comment

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dreamworks’ 2010 3D-animated film “Megamind” has become this year’s first film to top all three of the home video charts. The movie came in at No. 1 on the Nielsen Blu-Ray Disc and VideoScan First Alert charts as well as the “Home Media” Magazine’s rental chart for the week ending Feb. 27. This record-setting performance is even more exciting because a) the film, starring heavy hitters such as Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill, had a “soft sell” at the box-office and was competently received by critics, receiving a 72% from Rotten Tomatoes, and b) the DVD was released on a Friday  [ Read More ]

Box Office Forecast: TRON: Legacy To Derez The Competition

Posted by Perri Nemiroff On December - 16 - 2010 0 Comment

After a rather tame weekend during which The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader easily topped the competition despite a rather weak domestic opening, this one has a few more selections vying for top honors. We’ve got three films making wide debuts and another two expanding significantly. Of the newcomers, TRON: Legacy is likely to make the biggest impact. It may be opening in about 100 less theaters than Yogi Bear, but 234 of those theaters are IMAX. Combine that hefty ticket price with all of the theaters showing the film in non-IMAX 3D and TRON already has one heck of a head start. Odds are, TRON  [ Read More ]

This weekend is The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader’s weekend to lose. The third installment of the series has a major leg up, hitting almost 800 more theaters than its competition, The Tourist. While The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is quite the expansive project and Fox is hoping for some big returns, there’s certainly a chance this could be Prince Caspian all over again. On a $225 million budget, Caspian managed to make $55 million opening weekend, but then fell fast, only accumulating $141.6 million by the end of its domestic run, significantly less than its predecessor, which ended up with a total of $291.7  [ Read More ]

Box Office Forecast: Can Harry Potter Hold On In Week Three?

Posted by Perri Nemiroff On December - 2 - 2010 1 Comment

A new month might not mean a new box office leader. With The Warrior’s Way being the only wide release this first weekend in December, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I could be able to hold on to that top spot. It did seem Tangled had a fair shot of stealing that stop, but even with that second-week 60% plunge, Potter not only took Thanksgiving weekend from Tangled, but every day since then. Even on HSX.com, Potter stock is up $0.40 while Tangled is on the downfall, dropping $0.79. It’s basically a free-for-all for the rest of the lot. Hitting just 1,622 theaters with little buzz, it’s unlikely  [ Read More ]

Box Office Forecast: Moviegoers Are Most Thankful For Harry Potter

Posted by Perri Nemiroff On November - 25 - 2010 0 Comment

The extra long holiday weekend isn’t only good for getting you some time off from work or school, it’s also a fantastic opportunity for the movie industry to make a killing at the box office. As much as we’d like to spread the holiday cheer, we can’t give thanks to every film in the competition, so some will inevitably be left eating table scraps. Now that the Wednesday numbers are in, that’s clearly not the case with last weekend’s big winner, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I. After a massive $125 million week one opening, the franchise’s seventh installment kicked off its second weekend strong with a $14.5  [ Read More ]

Megamind Conquers The Box Office

Posted by Perri Nemiroff On November - 8 - 2010 1 Comment

Will Ferrell is enjoying yet another big opening weekend. Back in August, his cop comedy The Other Guys began its run with a $35.5 million start and now Megamind demolished the competition, earning the #1 spot at the box office with $46 million. Yes, of course, the film probably got a nice boost thanks to the pricey 3D tickets, but with a $11,668 per theater average it was an impressive performer regardless. Coming in at #2 is the latest from Todd Phillips, Due Date. Even though the film was hit with a barrage of negative reviews, it still managed to pull in a nice $32.7 million.
