Io9.com has a sneak peak at a major spoiler, courtesy of Screenrant, for the upcoming movie “GI Joe: Rise Of Cobra”, the live-action adaptation of the classic toy and animated series “Gi Joe”. You can check out the packaged toy and a close-up image of Cobra Commander, who will be played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, alongside the toy version of Duke, below.
“GI Joe: Rise Of Cobra”, starring Channing Tatum, Dennis Quaid, Ray Park, Marlon Wayans, Sienna Miller, and Christopher Eccleston, will be a re-telling of the origins of GI Joe, a worldwide and secret anti-terrorist force composed of elite hi-tech soldiers.
Cobra Commander was first released as a mail-in figure in 1982 from GI Joe and is best remembered as the masked and raspy-voiced commander of the worldwide terrorist organization COBRA. Known for always being masked, his identity is a mystery though the official GI Joe biography gives his background as having been a used car salesman who went on to become a con artist and later on, rise through the underground to become head of COBRA. The mask has been redesigned and will be enhanced with prosthetics, reportedly due to concerns by the production team about it resembling a KKK hood.
“GI Joe: Rise Of Cobra” is in theaters August 7th 2009.
