“Immortals” has long been compared to “300” or “Clash of the Titans,” but does the film directed by Tarsem Singh and starring Henry Cavill and Freida Pinto really seem like “300”-lite? Let’s see what the critics had to say about it.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film was given a 37% rotten rating, while the audience gave it a much better, fresher score of 75%. However, the critics weren’t keen on the story. According to the critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes, “The melding of real sets, CG work, and Tarsem’s signature style produces fireworks, though the same can’t be said for ‘Immortals’ slack, boring storytelling.” Here’s a small smattering of some of the critics’ remarks about the film:

“The same hyperstylized comic book-come-to-life approach that created an invigorating experience for viewers of ‘300’ elevates ‘Immortals’ above the level of a ‘Clash of the Titans’ knock-off.”–James Berardinelli, ReelViews

“Singh’s specialty is the establishing Wow Shot…Singh also has a knack for genuine eroticism, briefly displayed. The neo-classist visuals are matched to PlayStation action choreography that tops Snyders; this is among the most extravagantly violent movies in memory[.]”–Nick Pinkerton, The Village Voice

“It’s a murky, addled affair…the violence makes it unsuitable for young audiences.”–Philip French, The Observer [UK]
