I feel like the storyline in “Once Upon a Time” is now on a collision course with the finish line, which is good, because I’ve been itching to see how all of the loose ends were going to tie up.

In this episode, we finally get the full backstory on Regina. We learn that in Fairytale Land, she was good, sweet person–it was her mother who was really an evil queen. Regina was often bullied by her mother with her magic and brutal personality. However, the one thing that kept Regina from becoming evil like her mother was the true love she had for the stable boy, Daniel.

Due to the freak chance that Regina saves young Snow White from a renegade horse, King Leopold now feels that he has found the right woman to become his new wife. Regina’s mother accepts, but Regina decides that she and Daniel should run away together in order to live the lives they want to have. Snow accidentally barges in on them, and Regina tells her about the love she has for Daniel. She makes Snow promise not to tell anyone, especially Regina’s mother, about her and Daniel’s plans to run away. However, Regina’s mother figures out just the right things to say in order to get Snow to divulge the secret.

This error leads to Daniel’s death at the hands of Regina’s mother, the marriage of Regina to the king, and the true birth of evil in Regina. Poor Snow–the only reason she told was because she was led to believe that Regina’s mother only wanted her daughter’s happiness and didn’t want to lose her.

In Storybrooke, Poor Mary Margaret incriminates herself in an interview the district attorney (who is also King George, the king that’s after Snow White and James) and is later tortured by Regina’s mockery and glee. Emma is still trusting Sidney to help her find evidence against Regina, but we already know he’s a spy for her so we can’t trust him or his vase of tulips. Later on in the episode, Emma and August are busy trying to find evidence that Regina is behind the whole situation, and they finally find the shovel she used. But, of course, somehow she knows beforehand and has the evidence cleaned out of her garage.

Back at the station, Emma throws her vase of tulips out of anger and frustration, only to reveal that Sidney stuck a bug in it, allowing Regina to hear everything that went on in the station. Now Emma finally has evidence of a cover-up, and even better–Emma finds out Kathryn is still alive.
