However, not many sites have been talking about the worst films. Enter The Hollywood Reporter. The Hollywood Reporter has compiled a list of their top 15 movie flops of 2011.The list is thorough, including films that you might have already forgotten about, like “Mars Needs Moms” and “Sucker Punch.” But there are also movies that were supposed to be tentpole films, like “Green Lantern,” “Cowboys and…

Box Office Predictions: Transformers 3 To Go 2 For 2

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

After a monstrous record-breaking July 4th weekend courtesy of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, we get one a bit on the tamer side for the summer season. We’ve got two new wide releases making their debuts, but neither will be able to surpass Optimus Prime and the gang. Assuming everyone’s gotten Bad Teacher out of their systems, there should be more than enough room for Horrible Bosses to swoop in and snag just as much money, about $30 million. Usually, I’d expect a four-quadrant family film to trump an R-rated comedy, but after Mr. Popper’s Penguins failed to impress, I don’t see how Zookeeper could wrap the weekend with more…

Box Office Report: Transformers 3 begins obliteration of July 4th records

Sunday, July 3rd, 2011

The box office results for the 4th of July weekend sees an appropriate revenue explosion with “Transformers 3″ wiping out records. Dark of the Moon – much like its director – is on a mission to go out with the biggest bang in summer movie history. In other news, the rest of the top ten is in a freefall. Here are the studio estimates: 1. Transformers: Dark of the Moon ($97.4 million) 2. Cars 2 ($25.1 million) 3. Bad Teacher ($14.1 million) 4. Larry Crowne ($13 million) 5. Monte Carlo ($7.6 million) 6. Super 8 ($7.5 million) 7. Green Lantern ($6.2 million) 8. Mr. Popper’s Penguins ($5.1 million) 9. Bridesmaids…

Box Office Predictions: Mo' CGI Mo' Money For Michael Bay

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Transformers: Dark of the Moon may not have come anywhere near Revenge of the Fallen‘s $62 million Wednesday intake, but $37.7 million is not a bad start in the least. The question is, how will this initial difference affect the rest of Dark of the Moon‘s opening weekend? Revenge of the Fallen began its run with a $109 million weekend and Dark of the Moon should have no problem coming close. The difference? For Dark of the Moon that total will be the result of a four-day weekend rather than a mere three-day one like Revenge of the Fallen. Should Dark of the Moon continue to have a lesser per…

Box Office Report: Cars 2 Spanks Bad Teacher

Sunday, June 26th, 2011

The box office results for the weekend of June 24th – 26th has Pixar parking in its usual reserved spot once again. But after reading the reviews, it could be towed away very soon. Meanwhile, the continuous pattern of being Bad – a.k.a. R-rated comedy – earns more dirty money. Here are the studio estimates: 1. Cars 2 ($68 million) 2. Bad Teacher ($31 million) 3. Green Lantern ($18.3 million) 4. Super 8 ($12.1 million) 5. Mr. Popper’s Penguins ($10.3 million) 6. X-Men: First Class ($6.6 million) 7. The Hangover Part II ($5.8 million) 8. Bridesmaids ($5.3 million) 9. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($4.7 million) 10. Midnight…

Movie News Cheat Sheet: Casting Galore For Snow White, Django Unchained, The Bop Decameron And More

Sunday, June 26th, 2011

Sure May sort of marks the start of the summer movie season, but now that we’re past the summer solstice, June 21st, things are really starting to heat up. Not only are trailers and posters pouring in, but major updates on upcoming projects, too. Academy Award nominated director David O. Russell is loading up his next cast with famous faces as is Woody Allen and the director of Snow White and the Huntsman, Rupert Sanders. Meanwhile, 15-year-old Joel Courtney is seizing opportunities that came his way, likely courtesy of Super 8, and looks to lock in two upcoming projects. Sure, there’s an abundance of casting news this week, but as…

Box Office Predictions: Cars 2 To Steer Clear Of Competition With Ease

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

And we’re back to a weekend sans superhero movies. We’ve got two new wide releases making their debut both of which will likely struggle to fight off unhappy critics and powerful box office veterans. Cars 2 may be the one with the weaker reviews, but a whopping 4,115-theater count and the fact that it’s a sequel, will certainly give it the edge over Bad Teacher. Back in 2006, Cars opened to the tune of $60.1 million. Can its predecessor achieve the same? It looks like it. In 2008, the first Kung Fu Panda snagged a total of $60.2 million during week one, but Kung Fu Panda 2 started its run…

In Your Opinion: Green Lantern

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

“Green Lantern” premiered last week to the type of fanfare designated for any big-budget comic book superhero film. The film is the box-office winner, grossing $53.2 million over its opening weekend, but was a critical failure. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film only garnered a critical rating of 26%, making the film undeniably “rotten” by the site’s standards. However, the audience liked it and gave it a 61%. The consensus at the site was that the film was “[n]oisy, overproduced, and thinly written” and that the film “squanders an impressive budget and decades of comics mythology.” But what did you think about the film? Is it as bad as people…

Green Lantern showed some power in its opening weekend, while Jim Carrey sees his shining star begin to wither. Here are the studio estimates: 1. Green Lantern ($52.6 million) 2. Super 8 ($22.1 million) 3. Mr. Popper’s Penguins ($18.2 million) 4. X-Men: First Class ($11.5 million) 5. The Hangover Part II ($9.6 million) 6. Kung Fu Panda 2 ($8.7 million) 7. Bridesmaids ($7.4 million) 8. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($6.2 million) 9. Midnight in Paris ($5.2 million) 10. Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer…
