Movies like “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” aren’t necessarily made for critics, who are frequently presumed to have it in for live-action family films, with their primary colors and jokey, obvious set-ups for the lowest common denominator. And director Mark Waters’ film, starring Jim Carrey as a realtor who inherits a half dozen penguins and finds his swank New York penthouse apartment turned into a raucous, chilly wonderland, is certainly not a subtle thing. But it is sweet, and has a heart, and it also benefits in comparison to many movies of its ilk by the use of actual real, live animals rather than talking critters or overly slick CGI creations. Based on the…

Title: Mr. Popper’s Penguins Director: Mark Waters (‘Mean Girls,’ ‘Freaky Friday (2003)’) Starring: Jim Carrey, Carla Cugino (‘Sucker Punch’) and Angela Lansbury It’s not often when a Golden Globe-winning actor is upstaged by animals in a movie. But that’s certainly the case in the new live-action comedy ‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins,’ which stars Jim Carrey in the title role and is based on the 1939 book of the same name by Richard and Florence Atwater. Director Mark Waters successfully appeals to children, his targeted audience, by using real penguins instead of CGI in the film, but ultimately fails to connect with adults with the lack of emotions exhibited by Carrey. ‘Mr….

Another summer season weekend, another superhero film. Green Lantern is this weekend’s heavy hitter and while it does boast the “sexiest man alive,” it’s also battling some pretty harsh reviews. No, its poor critical reception won’t be detrimental to its box office performance, but it certainly could keep Thor‘s $65.7 million opening out of reach. Also, minus The Dark Knight, Warner Bros. hasn’t had much luck in the superhero department. Superman Returns opened with just $52.5 million on a whopping $270 million budget back in 2006, then there was Watchmen in 2009, which opened strong, but fizzle out fast, and, most recently, Jonah Hex which bombed in every way possible….

Yes, it’s Sunday, but aren’t you getting that summer vibe? Soon enough school will be out and offices will readjust their hours and rules to fit the new season. Jim Carrey is the latest actor to sign on to appear on the seventh season finale of ‘The Office,’ huffingtonpost.com is reporting. The details about Carrey’s role are being kept secret, as NBC hasn’t even confirmed the casting. But it’s rumored that his character will go after the manager position left vacant by Michael Scott at Dunder Mifflin on the episode, which airs May 19. Also guest-starring on the finale, which will run for 50 minutes, are Will Arnett, Ray Romano, James Spader, Catherine Tate and Ricky Gervais. Will Ferrell temporarily replaces Steve Carell, who portrays Michael and whose last episode airs on April 28. But Ferrell’s character, DeAngelo Vickers,…

Moviehole and CinemaBlend now have the poster for Jim Carrey’s newest family-friendly comedy, “Mr. Popper’s Pengins”. The poster is pretty standard–it shows Carrey’s face with a couple of penguins framing him–but it’s oddly nostalgic, if you want to call the ’90s “nostalgic” (which is weird, since I grew up in the ’90s). The poster feels like the Good Ole Days, when family-friendly films were gentle and surprisingly entertaining. Clean, I guess. I’m not saying that family-friendly films are clean today, but this poster makes the movie seem like it’s “nostalgic-clean”, if that makes any sense. Hopefully it does. In any case, “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” is based on the children’s book…

The winners of the second annual Dorian Awards, which honor the best in television and film, have been announced by the Gay & Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association (GALECA). Critics and entertainment journalists nationwide comprise GALECA’s membership, and one of their duties is to nominate TV programs and movies from an assortment of categories, not just LGBT-themed works, for the Dorians. But one goal of GALECA and the Dorians is to create stronger support for at-risk youth, equal rights and HIV prevention and recovery. One television series that was heavily honored by the Dorians was ‘Glee,’ as Jane Lynch, who portrays cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester, won for TV Musical or Comedy…

Title: I Love You Phillip Morris Directors: Glenn Ficarra & John Requa Starring: Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor, Leslie Mann, Rodrigo Santoro, Brennan Brown, David Jensen Just about everyone has heard the phrase, “Don’t mess with Texas.” Apparently, Steven Russell didn’t get that memo. He not only messed with Texas, he thoroughly embarrassed the lone star state time and time again. The manner in which he forges his way through life in this 102 minute feature titled I Love You Phillip Morris, has Hollywood scripting written all over it. But here’s the catch…This story really happened. Based on the exploits of con man extraordinaire – a.k.a. “King Con” – Phillip Morris…

Roadside Attractions sent us this red-band clip from the upcoming comedy “I Love You Phillip Morris” by directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra and starring Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor, Leslie Mann and Rodrigo Santoro. Synopsis: I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS is the improbable but true story of a spectacularly charismatic conman’s journey from small-town businessman to flamboyant white-collar criminal, who repeatedly finds himself in trouble with the law and on the lam, brilliantly escaping from the Texas prison system on four separate occasions – all in the name of love. Steven Russell (Jim Carrey) leads a seemingly average life – an organ player in the local church, happily married to…
