Zac Efron (“High School Musical”, “Me And Orson Welles”) has signed on to star in an adaptation of renowned comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis’s graphic novel, “Fire.” Efron would play a college student who is recruited to be an agent of the CIA. However, he soon discovers that he has in fact been recruited into a program that actually creates expendable spies and assassins. “Fire” will be produced by Neal Moritz and David Enge for Universal Studios. “Fire” was one of Bendis’s first works, created in 1993 and published through Caliber Comics, with Image Comics later on collecting the series into a single graphic novel. Criminal Macabre

Universal Acquires Criminal Macabre

Variety is reporting that Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to adapt the Dark Horse Comics title “Criminal Macabre,” the noir/horror miniseries created by Steve Niles. Kyle Ward has been set to write the script. Dark Horse’s Mike Richardson of Dark Horse, along with with Neal Moritz and his Original Film company, will be producing the film. The story follows a supernaturally-inclined private investigator/contract hitman named Cal McDonald, who hunts the various terrors such as vampires and ghosts who stalk humanity from the shadows. Jason Sudeikis Cast In Bounty

Jason Sudeikis (“Saturday Night Live”, “30 Rock”) has been cast in the comedy “Bounty Hunter” for Columbia, alongside Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler. The movie centers on a bounty hunter named Milo, played by Butler, who is hired to track down his ex-wife Casidy, played by Aniston. Sudeikis will play Stewart, a friend of Casidy’s who is under the delusion that he is her boyfriend. Andy Tennant is directing, based on a script by Sarah Thorpe, and Neal Moritz is producing through Original Films. Goosebumps Coming to the Big Screen

Writing duo Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander are in negotiations to write the live-action film adaptation of the children’s book horror series Goosebumps for Columbia Pictures. Neal Moritz’s production company, Original Film, is producing alongside Scholastic Entertainment’s Deborah Forte. Karaszewski and Alexander are expected to seal the deal this week. Although the book series, penned by R.L. Stine, has been made into a children’s television show in the past, the newly announced project will be the first feature adaptation of the series and could lead to a franchise for Columbia.
