Variety is reporting that Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to adapt the Dark Horse Comics title “Criminal Macabre,” the noir/horror miniseries created by Steve Niles.

Kyle Ward has been set to write the script. Dark Horse’s Mike Richardson of Dark Horse, along with with Neal Moritz and his Original Film company, will be producing the film.

The story follows a supernaturally-inclined private investigator/contract hitman named Cal McDonald, who hunts the various terrors such as vampires and ghosts who stalk humanity from the shadows.

The film has a tentative 2010 release date set for release.
