Gale Anne Hurd, the executive producer of this past summer’s smash “The Incredible Hulk”, starring Edward Norton and based on the classic Marvel Comics character, has just optioned “Gearhead” from Arcana Comics, for a big-screen adaptation through her company Valhalla Motion Pictures. Hurd will also be producing.

According to Arcana and Superherohype.com, Hurd says “We are excited to bring ‘Gearhead’ to life. It’s a terrific character-driven story set in a unique and compelling world.”

“Gearhead”, created by Dennis Hopeless and Kevin Mellon, is about a girl named Shelby, who embarks on a mission to find her family and take down the corrupt superheroes who run the country, eventually discovering her destiny to be as her father before her, known as the Gearhead. Going “from the drag strip all the way to the White House”, according to Arcana’s description of the 4-issue miniseries, it was initially published in 2007 and is available in collected trade format.

“Gearhead” is one of many independent comic titles being optioned for film adaptation in the wake of the continued success of large-name comic book movies such the Batman film “The Dark Knight”, “Iron Man”, and the aforementioned “The Incredible Hulk”.

No release date has been set.
