According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Pictures has purchased the rights to the Wired Magazine article “The Untold Story of the World’s Biggest Diamond Heist,” by writer Joshua Davis, with plans to produce a big-screen version of the incredible story in the article. Josh Abrams (Star Trek) will take on the project as a producer and potentially as a director through his Bad Robot imprint.

The production-management company Circle of Confusion, which manages Davis, is attached to produce alongside Davis, who will be an executive producer on the project. No writer has been hired yet. The article, which will be published in the April issue of Wired magazine, describes the true story of an unprecedented diamond heist in Antwerp, Belgium.

In early 2003, a small group of Italian thieves managed to bypass 10 layers of high-tech security to access a vault underneath the Antwerp Diamond Center in Belgium, and make off with a something in the neighborhood of $100 million in diamonds, gold and jewelry, with the exact value of the stolen property still a mystery.

Abrams’ “Star Trek” reboot is hitting theaters May 8th 2009.
