Variety is reporting that acclaimed director Sam Raimi (the “Evil Dead” and “Spider-Man” films) has signed on to direct “Warcraft,” a live-action film adaptation of “World Of Warcraft”, the fantasy video game franchise. Legendary Pictures and Blizzard Entertainment are mounting the film, with Warner Brothers distributing and co-financing. Charles Roven, who produced “The Dark Knight”, is attached to produce.

The “Warcraft” universe, first launched in 1994 with the first game, is about a fantasy war between the two races, the Horde and the Alliance. The game has since developed a global fanbase and expanded the franchise to include books and comics based in the world of the game.
